Arsenal vs PSV predictions

Arsenal are back at the top table of European football, and it has been a long time coming.

Not since the 2016/17 campaign have the Gunners competed at this level. They topped their group ahead of Paris Saint-Germain that year, but were demolished 10-2 on aggregate by Bayern Munich in the round of 16.

A fifth-place finish in the Premier League meant Arsenal did not qualify for the following edition of the tournament, and they continued to miss out over the next few seasons under the stewardship of three different managers in Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta.

Now they are back - and determined to do much more than make up the numbers.

Last season was this team’s coming-of-age moment under Arteta, who has comprehensively dispelled the doubts over his suitability for a role this big in his first managerial job.

Given they were in Pot Two for the group stage draw, things could have turned out much worse for Arsenal.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain were among their possible opponents from Pot One, but Arsenal were instead paired with Sevilla.

PSV and Lens round off Group B. None of their three rivals are to be dismissed, after all, but it would be a surprise if Arsenal finished below top spot.

Still, most players within Arteta’s squad have no Champions League experience, and nor does the Spaniard in his managerial career.

That should not be a barrier to success in the group stage, but it could be a factor later in the tournament.

Arsenal cannot afford to look that far ahead, though, and Arteta will ensure his players are fully focused on PSV’s trip to north London.

📝 Arsenal vs PSV betting tips

Arsenal will not have everything their own way against PSV this week, but they should still come out on top in front of their own fans.

Arsenal to win and both teams to score - 17/10 (bet365)

Arsenal ground out a 1-0 victory over Everton at the weekend. Their performance at Goodison Park will not win any awards for aesthetics, but winning ugly will have pleased Arteta.

It is not that Arsenal played particularly badly. They dominated possession and created the better chances. But they were not at their fluent best, as a dogged Everton team made life difficult for the Premier League title hopefuls.

The clean sheet was the basis for Arsenal’s victory - and how they would love another one on Wednesday.

Do not bank on it, though. The Gunners have only managed one defensive shut-out in their last 11 matches at the Emirates.

In that time the likes of Fulham, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Leeds United have all silenced the home crowd by putting the ball in the back of the net.

PSV are averaging 3.11 goals per game in all competitions so far this term, and they will arrive in north London believing they can score.

Avoiding defeat will be tough if Arsenal play to their potential, though. Goals at both ends and a home win looks like a solid combination bet.

Draw at half-time - 8/5 (bet365)

Arsenal have not always started quickly in front of their own supporters over the last few months.

Against Manchester United in the match immediately prior to the international break, they fell behind in the 27th minute but levelled the scores almost immediately.

Last month they conceded within seconds of kick-off against Fulham and did not find an equaliser until the final quarter of the game.

Meanwhile in 10 of their 19 home matches last term, Arsenal were level or behind at the interval.

There will be an excellent atmosphere at the Emirates on Wednesday and the home players will strive to rise to the occasion.

But because of the spotlight on the club’s first Champions League assignment in six and a half years, it could take a while for Arsenal to find their normal rhythm.

PSV are a very capable team and they have also had an additional day’s race after thrashing NEC 4-0 on Saturday.

The Dutch outfit could have some joy in sticking with Arsenal in the opening 45 minutes of this encounter.

Gabriel Jesus to score any time - 11/8 (bet365)

Gabriel Jesus has now made three substitute appearances since recovering from a knee injury, and he could be in line for his first start of the season when PSV come to town.

Arteta was full of praise for the former Manchester City marksman after the Everton game.

“He is a tremendous player, a really important player for us,” the manager said. “He changed our world last season. You could all see that. He is going to be a really important player for us.”

Jesus is not exactly prolific. He is more of a facilitating link player than an out-and-out goal-getter.

Nevertheless, the Brazilian will be desperate to score his first Champions League goal since April 2022 and this could be the match where he gets it.
