Brentford vs Arsenal predictions

The first north London derby of the season ended with both teams taking a share of the spoils.

Arsenal twice went ahead against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, but both times they were pegged back by their arch-rivals.

A draw was a fair result on the overall balance of play, but Spurs would have been more pleased with the point than Arsenal.

That is in part because they were playing away from home, but also because the Ange Postecoglou project is still in its infancy.

Still, a draw was not a bad result for Arsenal and they remain in contact with Manchester City at the top of the table ahead of a clash between those two teams in early October.

That fixture will already be playing on Mikel Arteta’s mind, but Arsenal must face Brentford, Bournemouth and Lens before City’s trip to the Emirates Stadium.

Anything less than three victories in those matches would be a disappointment for the Gunners, although this is the fixture Arteta would most readily sacrifice.

Having said that, another trophy would not go amiss in the red and white half of north London, especially as Arsenal have ended the last two campaigns empty-handed.

Somewhat surprisingly, they have not won the EFL Cup since 1993 and rank behind the likes of Leicester City and Nottingham Forest in the list of all-time triumphs.

Arsenal will be looking to improve on that record, even though this competition is not exactly their main priority for the season.

📝 Brentford vs Arsenal betting tips

Arsenal should book their place in the next round of the EFL Cup with a victory over Brentford on Wednesday.

Arsenal to win - 10/11 (bet365)

Brentford suffered a second loss in succession at the weekend, going down 3-1 to Everton at the Gtech Community Stadium after a 1-0 reverse against Newcastle United seven days prior.

It was only the third Premier League home game in which the Bees have suffered defeat since May 2022, as Everton joined an exclusive club of away victors that also includes Newcastle and Arsenal.

It will be interesting to see how Thomas Frank reacts to that setback. On the one hand, he could name a strong side here in the hope of righting the wrong of the weekend.

On the other hand, the Brentford boss may decide to prioritise Sunday’s trip to Nottingham Forest as his team aims to get back on track in the Premier League. Frank named a weakened XI for the meeting with Newport County in the second round, which Brentford won on penalties.

Either way, this will be a tricky contest for the home team. Their overall record at the Gtech is excellent and Brentford tend to be a tough nut to crack in front of their own fans.

But Arsenal are one of the top teams in Europe right now and they should have too much quality for their opponents, even if Arteta shuffles his pack.

Frank, you feel, would settle for a loss on Wednesday if it guaranteed Brentford three points against Forest at the weekend.

Arsenal to score in both halves - 7/4 (bet365)

Arsenal delivered a masterclass of a performance at the Gtech Community Stadium last term, a ground on which Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion all failed to win.

Goals from William Saliba and Gabriel Jesus put Arsenal 2-0 ahead before the half-hour mark. Fabio Vieira then added a third to seal the deal early in the second period.

Arteta will hope for something similar on Wednesday. Getting a win wrapped up early would be ideal for the Arsenal boss, who will want to keep certain players fresh for the challenges that lie ahead.

Arsenal had the best away record in the Premier League last season, and they scored in both halves on seven occasions on the road.

They are yet to repeat the feat in 2023/24 but may well do against a Brentford team that looked shaky defensively against Everton at the weekend.

Eddie Nketiah to score any time - 2/1 (bet365)

Arsenal included both Jesus and Eddie Nketiah in their starting XI for the north London derby on Sunday.

That was because Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli were both ruled out through injury, and neither attacker is guaranteed to start on Wednesday.

That gives Arteta an unwelcome headache - and it also increases the chances of Nketiah being handed another start against Brentford.

That is particularly so when you consider that Arsenal will not want to overload Jesus following his recent return from a knee injury.

The jury remains out on the England international at the very highest level. If they want to win Premier League titles, Arsenal may need to sign a more prolific centre-forward.

Nketiah is still a very capable squad player, though, and he has already scored two goals in the Premier League this season.

Only Bukayo Saka has found the back of the net more often in an Arsenal shirt, so do not be surprised if Nketiah makes his mark at the Gtech.
