Ashrun cements spot in the Melbourne Cup field

In a heart-stopping photo finish at Wednesday’s Geelong Cup, Ashrun, steered by champion trainer Ciaron Maher and owner Jamie Lovett, managed to secure a crucial second place.

This nail-biting result ensures Ashrun’s place in the upcoming Melbourne Cup, having needed a top-three finish to bypass the race’s ballot clause.

The intense finish had four contenders tightly packed behind winner Amade. Lovett’s visible relief mirrored the sentiments of many.

Ashrun’s journey has been challenging, marked by a fourth-place finish in the 2020 Geelong Cup and a subsequent 10th in the Melbourne Cup, followed by a staggering 1000-day gap between races due to injuries.

“I’m delighted for the owners,” remarked Lovett, acknowledging the horse’s incredible comeback.

While Ashrun might be an underdog at Flemington, Lovett holds hope for a top-six finish.
