Atletico Madrid lost ground in their chase to reach the top of La Liga on the weekend as they fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat to Las Palmas on Friday night.

The defeat ended a six match winning run in the league for Diego Simeone's side, and a nine game unbeaten run in all competitions.

The Spanish side are now six points off the top of the table in La Liga, though they have played a game fewer than everybody around them.

Los Colchoneros have struggled to carry their good domestic form into Europe this season though, having been held to draws away from home at both Lazio and Celtic, and being forced to come from behind against Feyenoord in their home match to snatch a 3-2 win.

Five points from three games leaves Atletico second in the table in a tightly contested Group E in which just two points separate the top three sides.

Celtic are slightly further adrift in the group having picked up just one point from their three games, coming in their draw against Tuesday's opposition in Glasgow a fortnight ago.

Brendan Rodgers' side have lost just one of their last nine matches in all competitions, and their 3-0 win over Ross County on Saturday gave them an eight point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership and means they remain unbeaten in the league all season.

Celtic have never beaten Atletico Madrid in any of their seven previous meetings, though they have drawn three of them, including their meeting a fortnight ago in which the Spaniards were forced to come from behind twice to earn a point.

Atletico Madrid are expected to get back to winning ways at home on Tuesday night in the Champions League, with Betfair offering 9/1 odds on our tip which sees the Spaniards winning 3-1.
