Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields indicated he is being given too much information by the coaching staff and thinking too much as a result rather than trusting his instincts. Fields says he played “kind of robotic” in last week’s loss at Tampa Bay. And one reason “could be coaching.” Fields’ comments come after two discouraging losses to start a season in which the Bears hope to show signs of improvement. He struggled against Green Bay at Soldier Field and didn’t fare any better against the Buccaneers. Fields was sacked six times and threw two late interceptions. The Bears have called few designed runs for him after he nearly set the NFL’s single-season rushing record for a quarterback last season.

Jorge Polanco capped a three-run ninth inning with a go-ahead single, helping the Minnesota Twins overcome Hunter Greene’s 14 strikeouts to beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-3. The Twins trimmed their magic number to clinch the AL Central to two games. With Minnesota trailing 3-2, Willi Castro led off the ninth against Reds closer Alexis Díaz with a bunt single, then stole second and took third on catcher Luke Maile’s throwing error. Kyle Farmer followed with a tying single. Polanco followed with a bases-loaded, two-out single off Sam Moll a few batters later that scored Farmer and Christian Vázquez. Griffin Jax pitched the bottom of the inning for his third save.

Gambling regulators have fined the online sports betting company PointsBet $25,000, citing violations of New Jersey sports betting laws. Regulators said Wednesday that the violations included taking bets on soccer games that had already ended. The state Division of Gaming Enforcement also says the company also took bets on a New Jersey college basketball team, in violation of state gambling laws, as well as bets on a video games tournament in which one of the contestants was under the age of 18. The Denver-based company declined comment, but reached a settlement with the state requiring it to pay the fine.

Jude Bellingham has helped extend Real Madrid’s perfect start to the season by scoring a stoppage-time goal in the team’s 1-0 win over newcomer Union Berlin in the Champions League. The newly signed Bellingham scored his sixth goal in as many matches with Madrid by picking up a loose ball inside the area and firing it into the open net four minutes into stoppage time at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Madrid had missed chance after chance and was denied by the woodwork a couple of times as the Spanish powerhouse appeared to be headed to a disappointing group-stage debut in the European competition.

The San Francisco 49ers return home after beginning the season with back-to-back road wins to take on the New York Giants. The Niners are seeking their second 3-0 start in the past 25 seasons after victories against Pittsburgh and the Rams. The Giants are coming off their biggest comeback win since 1949 when they rallied from 28-7 down in the second half before beating Arizona 31-28. New York had allowed 60 straight points to begin the season for the worst start for any team since 1978 before mounting the comeback.

An autopsy on New England Patriots fan Dale Mooney, who died at a Sunday night game at Gillette Stadium, didn’t indicate a traumatic injury was to blame, though a “medical issue” was identified in his death.

Body camera footage of Cavaliers executive Koby Altman undergoing field sobriety tests shows him being told he nearly caused an accident before being arrested and charged with driving while impaired. Altman was arrested Friday near downtown Cleveland. He was first stopped by Ohio State Highway Patrol officers for a traffic violation before refusing a breath test and being taken into custody. The Cavaliers released an brief initial statement a day after Altman’s arrest. They followed up with more comment Wednesday, a day after the bodycam video emerged and Altman pleaded not guilty through his attorney in court. The 41-year-old Altman has been with the team since 2012.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes says he is happy with a reworked contract that makes him the league's highest-paid player over the next four years, but also pleased in the way the deal is structured. Mahomes said Wednesday in his first comments since the deal was announced this week that he also wanted to make sure that Kansas City could surround him with talent. The change to his 10-year, $450 million deal essentially moves some of the money from the last five years to the next four years, and the Chiefs and Mahomes' representatives plan to revisit the back end of the contract when 2026 rolls around.

Italy rallied to beat Uruguay 38-17 and set up a potentially decisive clash against New Zealand at the Rugby World Cup next week. To have any chance of reaching the quarterfinals for the first time, Italy will have to sort out its discipline. Two yellow cards and a poor performance under pressure had Italy trailing 17-7 at the break. Italy earned a second bonus-point win but its toughest Pool A games are to come against France and New Zealand.

Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young did not participate in Wednesday’s walkthrough practice because of an ankle injury, opening the door for the possibility of veteran Andy Dalton starting on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Panthers coach Frank Reich said at this point it’s too early to know if Young will be able to play this week. Dalton took first-team reps as Young looked on, per Reich. Young was injured at some point in Carolina’s 20-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Monday night, although he did complete the game and threw a touchdown and 2-point conversion pass on his final drive. The Panthers have signed Jake Luton to the practice squad, and he could be promoted as the team’s backup quarterback if Young can’t play.

Brennan Armstrong holds 15 Virginia records set over five seasons. He's got another game on Friday night at Scott Stadium, but this time he'll be wearing the visitors’ colors. The left-handed quarterback transferred to North Carolina State following last season. It was a year in which he struggled in his transition to the more pro-style offense Virginia coach Tony Elliott employs. He’s also been reunited at N.C. State with offensive coordinater Robert Anae. The Wolfpack comes in with a 2-1 record and an offense that is adjusting to a new system. Virginia is winless in three games and would love to spoil a friend's return.
