Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets delivered record numbers for their season opener. Rodgers’ ill-fated Jets debut averaged 22.6 million viewers on ESPN, ABC, ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes. The Jets have five more prime-time appearances scheduled but only two can be subbed out due to the league’s flexible schedule rules. Those are the Week 10 “Sunday Night Football” contest at Las Vegas on Nov. 12 and the Dec. 28 game at Cleveland on "Thursday Night Football."

The Seattle Seahawks signed veteran offensive tackle Jason Peters with the team having concerns about the health of both of their starting tackles. The signing was announced by Peters’ representatives and was later announced by the team as an addition to the practice squad. Peters is protection for Seattle in case injuries suffered by left tackle Charles Cross and right tackle Abraham Lucas end up being long term. Cross has a sprained toe and Lucas is dealing with soreness in his knee both suffered in Seattle’s season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The 41-year-old Peters is a two-time first-team All-Pro and a nine-time Pro Bowl selection. Peters appeared in 10 games and made one start last season for Dallas.

Luciano Spalletti engineered his first win as Italy coach as the Azzurri beat Ukraine 2-1 in a crucial European Championship qualifier thanks to two goals from Davide Frattesi. The Inter Milan midfielder scored both goals in a dominant first half for the Azzurri before Andriy Yarmolenko got Ukraine back into the match four minutes before the break. Italy moved into second place in Group C. It is above Ukraine on head-to-head record. The Azzurri have played a game less than Ukraine and group leader England. North Macedonia also moved onto seven points after winning 2-0 at Malta.

New Columbus Blue Jackets coach Mike Babcock says he did nothing wrong in asking players to show him photos off their phone. A former NHL player Paul Bissonnette says he heard from the Blue Jackets that  the coach was invading players' privacy. Babcock called that a gross representation of his meetings with players and staff. He says he asked for family photos as a way of getting to know people around the team better. Team captain Boone Jenner expressed disappointment at the situation being blown out of proportion.

Former NFL receiver Mike Williams, who was injured in a construction accident two weeks ago and later put on a ventilator, has died at the age of 36. Agent Hadley Engelhard says Williams died Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida. The Tampa Bay Times reported that Williams was injured at a construction site in Hillsborough County and removed from life support on Thursday. He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills from 2010 to 2014. Williams was a fourth-round draft pick of the Bucs following a standout college career at Syracuse. He had 65 receptions for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns as a rookie. The Buffalo native spent four seasons with the Bucs before playing one year with his hometown Bills.

Gleyber Torres had a go-ahead, two-run single in the sixth inning and started a game-ending double play with the bases loaded, helping the New York Yankees hold on to beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Tuesday in a day-night doubleheader opener. DJ LeMahieu added an RBI double to help New York earn just its second victory in 10 meetings with Boston this season and get back to .500 at 72-72. The Red Sox have lost five of their last six. Alex Verdugo grounded into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded in the ninth against Clay Holmes.

Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt is unveiling a proposal for a new $900 million downtown arena that would keep the NBA's Thunder in the city through at least 2050 if approved by voters. The plan released Tuesday calls for the continuation of a 1% sales tax for six years, $70 million from an existing sales tax approved by voters in 2019, and a $50 million contribution from the Thunder ownership group. The plan will be presented to the Oklahoma City Council on Sept. 26. A majority of the council would need to approve a call for a Dec. 12 citywide election. If approved, Holt says the Thunder will play in the new arena for at least 25 years.

DePaul and athletic director DeWayne Peevy have agreed to a contract extension through June 2027. A longtime college athletics administrator, Peevy was hired in August 2020. The extension comes after the school recently announced plans for an on-campus basketball practice facility that it hopes will lift its long struggling men’s program and help its women’s team remain successful. The school also plans to give other athletic facilities an extensive makeover. Peevy spent 12 years prior to his arrival at DePaul in Kentucky’s athletic department, going from a role in media relations to deputy athletic director, and oversaw the Wildcats’ powerhouse basketball program. He was the SEC’s media relations director before that.

They think they're smarter than everyone else.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has announced the NCAA has denied defensive lineman Noah Shannon’s appeal of his season-long suspension for sports wagering. Shannon has not been charged in the state’s criminal investigation of illegal sports wagering by athletes at Iowa and Iowa State. Shannon started 28 games and came out of spring listed No. 1 at left defensive tackle. Ferentz says he's disappointed in the NCAA's decision. Shannon has apologized to fans and said he would not let his mistake define him. Ferentz says Shannon made at least one wager on an event involving a Hawkeyes team in another sport.
