Belmont Stakes 2023: Results, payouts, order of finish of Arcangelo’s victory

Arcangelo made Jena Antonucci the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race when the ridgling captured the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

The winner of the Peter Pan Stakes on May 13 at Belmont Park, Arcangelo was back at the Elmont, New York, racetrack for another victory on Saturday.

Arcangelo and National Treasure turned into the stretch at the front of a nine-horse field. Arcangelo slipped ahead on the rail as the Preakness Stakes winner faded in the closing stretch of the 1.5-mile Test of the Champion.

Arcangelo held off a hard-charging pack of four horses to win, with betting favorite Forte coming on for second. Forte had been the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, but the colt had been scratched on the morning of the Run for the Roses because of a bruised hoof, and the injury kept Forte out of the Preakness Stakes, too.

Although Forte had not raced since winning the Florida Derby on April 1, the colt went off at 2-1 in the Belmont Stakes. Arcangelo was at 7-1, which was fifth in the wagering.

Arcangelo paid $17.80 to win, $7.20 to place and $4.90 to show.

Forte paid $4.30 to place and $3.30 to show.

Tapit Trice paid $4.10 to show.

The $2 exacta paid $68, and the $1 trifecta paid $133.24.

The addition of Hit Show or Angel of Empire in fourth produced a $292.50 payout with Hit Show and a $191.50 payout with Angel of Empire on a $1 superfecta wager. Hit Show and Angel of Empire finished in a dead hit for fourth place.

Arcangelo finished 1.5 lengths ahead of Forte. At 2:29.23, Arcangelo had the second-slowest winning time for the Belmont in the past 10 years. Secretariat set the 1.5-mile Belmont Stakes record with a 2:24 winning time in 1973.

Mage won the Kentucky Derby on May 6, finished third in the Preakness Stakes and did not enter the Belmont Stakes.

National Treasure did not enter the Kentucky Derby, then won the Preakness Stakes on May 20. National Treasure finished sixth on Saturday.

While the Triple Crown races produced three different winners, Javier Castellano rode two of the first-place horses. The jockey earned his first Belmont Stakes victory on Saturday after winning the Kentucky Derby for the first time on Mage. Castellano has ridden two Preakness Stakes winners.

The victory brought a $900,000 prize to Arcangelo’s owners.

The order of finish in the 155th Belmont Stakes:

1. Arcangelo

2. Forte

3. Tapit Trice

4. Angel of Empire
