Australian Open 2023 Outright tips

Men’s Draw

It will take a very brave or foolish person to bet against Novak Djokovic winning his tenth Australian Open title in Melbourne in two weeks’ time.

The Serbian was famously denied even the opportunity to make it a round ten in 2022 as the Australian authorities deported him on the eve of the tournament following a legal dispute around his non-vaccinated COVID status. However, Djokovic arrives in good shape having taken the unusual (for him) decision to play a warm-up event and winning the Adelaide title.

Djokovic has frankly ridiculous statistics whichever way it is sliced and is deserving of his odds-on status ahead of the tournament. The main reason for this is the lack of a particularly prominent rival to attempt to take him on with.

Taylor Fritz has ended up on the Djokovic side of the draw, but in the other quarter. In truth, it is a fairly soft quarter but regardless Fritz has a pretty solid case to be a regular contender for the biggest events in the game now. Whilst he isn’t the biggest server on tour, it is a pretty reliable stroke these days and it allows him to really open up on his return game. He is in good form having won the United Cup for the US and, most importantly, he has won seven of his last ten matches against Top 10 players. He is forecasted to meet Djokovic in the semi-finals which would b tough, but he is well placed to take advantage of any surprises in the Djokovic quarter.

The other alternatives are each way plays to take advantage of the draw bias. The top half of the draw is very open as we aren’t sure about Nadal’s level of fitness or quality at the moment. There is even a semi-decent chance that Jack Draper can take Nadal out in the opening round.

Frances Tiafoe had a deep run to the semifinals of the US Open and in doing so he showed that he can step up in the big occasion. His statistics on the tour do not stand out and he still has improvement to make but he is an attractive price in an area of the draw where there are good possibilities.

Other potential candidates included Cameron Norrie, Jannik Sinner, and Sebastian Korda but for my third and final selection I surprised myself by liking the chances of Stefanos Tsitsipas to at least reach the final. The Greek won all four of his United Cup singles matches and his partnership with Mark Philippousis seems to be paying some dividends. Whilst Tsitsipas still plays too often he has given himself the week off to prepare for the main draw and he showed some grit in the United Cup to win those matches. He seems to be back in a good place mentally and that’s the key to Tsitsipas. Whilst his relationship with his father Apostolos may still be a concern in stressful situations, he should receive some good backing from the vast Greek diaspora in Australia as well.

Tips

Stefanos Tsitsipas 12/1 EW

Taylor Fritz 20/1

Frances Tiafoe 80/1 EW

Women’s Draw

The women’s #1 Iga Swiatek is a strong favourite but certainly isn’t as bulletproof as Djokovic on the men’s side. Swiatek has never won the Australian Open and her hard court form certainly isn’t as dominant as her clay game. However, she did win the last hard court Grand Slam in New York and deserves her place at the top of the market as a result of her dominant statistical edge over the field. The Pole has won 88% of her matches in the last 12 months, a full 15% more than her nearest rival – Ons Jabeur.

However, she lost very convincingly to Jessica Pegula in the United Cup last week, which was the perfect example of a player being able to be aggressive against Swiatek and managing to get through her defences on the harder courts of Australia. There are a lot of women in the draw who are capable of doing what Pegula did so the short price about Swiatek does not appeal at all.

Pegula herself is one that I like in the draw. Her seeded section isn’t a particularly tough one, at least until the fourth round where she could take on Madison Keys or Victoria Azarenka. The American has not yet won a Grand Slam but she’s trending towards being at that level. She is very highly ranked now at #3, her games won ratio over the last year has hit over 110%, which is elite and she thrives on a hard court.

The other options come from the other side of the draw which is much weaker. Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek are in the top quarter with Pegula in Q2. Belinda Bencic has just won the second Adelaide warm-up event with an annihilation of Daria Kasatkina in the final, she couldn’t be in better shape to compete in Melbourne. The Swiss’ price has understandably shortened as a result of this but she is probably still slightly too big.

Caroline Garcia and Veronika Kudermetova were very close to being selections and I believe that they could battle out the third quarter, but ultimately there were too many doubts about the ultimate ability of either woman to win the tournament outright, and Kudermetova pulled out of her semifinal this week citing an injury which is never ideal.

The final two selections are longshots but with solid cases behind them. Marketa Vondrousova is on the comeback trail having missed a fair bit of tennis in the last year. Hard isn’t her best surface, but he recorded impressive wins over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Kaia Kanepi in a warm up event whilst pushing second favourite Aryna Sabalenka very close.

Marie Bouzkova has an excellent games won ratio in the last year and could be flying under the radar slightly at a huge price. She’s very good on a hard court as well but lacks the big time experience to be judged as a real favourite. An alternative could be to back Bouzkova for the quarter as well.

Tips

Jessica Pegula 10/1

Belinda Bencic 16/1 EW

Marketa Voundrousova 66/1 EW

Marie Bouzkova 250/1 EW

Day 2 Review

Andy Murray’s epic victory over Matteo Berrettini dominated the headlines on Day 2. Unfortunately Berrettini was part of the Day 2 bet and despite having match point in the fifth set he failed to deliver that win. Kaia Kanepi also collapsed after losing a second set tiebreak against Aussie wildcard Kim Burrell.

Rain interrupted play on most courts on Day 2 and this may impact the schedule going forwards.
