Men’s Australian Open 2023 favourites

The narrative of this year’s Australian Open will surround the odds-on title favourite, Novak Djokovic. He’ll be seeking a record 10th title in Melbourne, 12 months after being kicked out of the country over his COVID-19 vaccination status.

If he plays to his best, he’ll likely win, but a hamstring injury scare in the run-up to the event is a worry for his backers.

Perhaps Daniil Medvedev could capitalise. He’ll be hoping it’s third time lucky having lost in the last two Melbourne finals. However, his form has not been the greatest since he lost last year’s title decider from two sets up.

The man who beat him that day, Rafael Nadal, will be bidding to retain the title but the Spaniard, 22 times a Grand Slam champion, has had plenty of injury issues over the past year and comes in on the back of two defeats at the United Cup warm-up event.

Home hope Nick Kyrgios is another who has had injury problems - his backers will be taking something of a shot in the dark given he’s yet to play this season and has contested only two matches since the US Open in September.

Women’s Australian Open 2023 favourites

Iga Swiatek is a clear favourite at the top of the betting - that’s a fair assessment given she won two Grand Slam titles in 2022 and was dominant for long periods of the season.

Still, there’s a feeling she’s vulnerable on a faster court, which is what should be on offer at Melbourne Park.

Worryingly, she lost heavily to Jessica Pegula recently, ending that match in tears. She then withdrew from another warm-up event with a shoulder issue.

Aryna Sabalenka is next on the bookies’ list. The Belarusian is a player capable of beating anyone with her hard-hitting game but consistency is often a problem for her.

Americans Pegula and Coco Gauff are others with the potential to go well from the top of the market.

Australian Open 2023 betting tips

So what are the best bets for the 2023 Australian Open. Let’s take a look…

Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the men’s singles at 12/1

Three times a semi-finalist in Melbourne, Tsitsipas enjoys this tournament where a large Greek population really gets behind him. He’s been there or thereabouts at many of the big events in recent times and last season reached three Masters finals (the level below the Slams), winning in Monte Carlo.

He’s in the opposite half to Djokovic and can’t play Nadal or Medvedev until the semis so the draw looks good too.

Caroline Garcia to win the women’s singles at 12/1

Once famously tipped to become world no 1 by Andy Murray, Garcia may finally be able to achieve that goal in 2023. She was excellent in the second half of last season, one which ended with her winning the prestigious WTA Finals tournament in Texas.

The Frenchwoman loves to get on the front foot and with a decent draw which has kept her away from Swiatek, she looks to have a strong chance.

Cameron Norrie each way in the men’s singles at 50/1

Five-time runner-up Andy Murray probably won’t be returning to the final again but that’s not to say a Briton won’t make it. Norrie has started the season in fantastic form, beating Nadal at the United Cup event and then reaching the final in Auckland.

It could be argued he’s played a bit too much but there’s no doubt the Briton is in fine form and the price about last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist looks decent.

How to bet on the Australian Open

To bet on the Australian Open you can obviously visit your bookmaker’s local shop but if you want to do it from the comfort of your own home, or on the go, then there are many online firms ready to take your bet. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Head to the bookmaker’s website and register - most firms have a sign-up offer which involves bonuses such as free bets - be sure to use the links in this article to get the best offers. The bookie will ask for things like your name, address and date of birth. In order to place a bet you will also need to enter your payment details. Debit and credit cards are the most widely-used form of payment.
  1. Look for the market you want to bet on. In this example, you will want to head to the tennis section. Most bookie websites have a sport-by-sport index or menu to direct you there. Once on the tennis page, look for the Australian Open markets. Some sites offer a ‘search’ box into which you could add ‘Australian Open’ and the market should be found for you.
  1. Once you have found the market you want to bet on - for example, the Australian Open men’s outright - click on the price which will be found next to the name of the player you want to back. The selection will then be added to your betslip which will be shown somewhere on the screen, often at the side.
  1. From here, you will be able to add your stake (the amount you want to bet). Once this is added, your potential return/winnings are usually shown for your information. If you are happy with your bet, on the betslip there will be a button to click - ‘place bet’ or something of that ilk. Hit that. Some firms offer a secondary confirmation stage so you can double-check your bet to ensure no typos have been made - no-one wants to bet £100 instead of £10!
  1. Once the bet is placed, sit back and watch the action unfold. You could even use the online firm’s ‘in-play’ markets to either cash-out your bet during play or place another one while the action is ongoing.
