Netherlands v Croatia

Wednesday, 7:45, Premier Sports 1

Both Teams to Score
Netherlands were impressive at the World Cup last December, beating both Spain and the USA until going out to Argentina on penalties in the quarter finals. Since the World Cup they were smashed 4-0 away to France before beating Gibraltar 3-0. They are strong on home soil though, going 10 games without a loss now. However, of those 10 games, two were against Gibraltar while they beat Denmark and Belgium but could only draw with Germany and Poland.

Croatia faced Argentina following that quarter final and lost 3-0 and then beat Morocco 2-1 in the third place Playoff. Since the World Cup they’ve drawn with Wales and beaten Turkey. They’ve not lost any of their last nine away games, beating France, Austria and Denmark over those games. Both teams are in robust form then and you’d have to expect both to get at least one goal.

Draw
Pretty difficult to separate the sides here, the Dutch are strong at home but this Croatia side are just so doggedly difficult to defeat, as was evident in the World Cup. While the stats indicate there’s more goals in the home squad, Croatia are pretty rock solid at the back and don’t concede many and we’re likely looking at a 1-1 here. Extra Time and penalties may well be on the cards.

Spain v Italy

Thursday, 7:45pm, Premier Sports 1

Over 2.5 Goals
Spain’s World Cup was nothing short of a disaster. Even though they destroyed Costa Rica 7-0 in their opening game they failed to win any of their following three matches and were sent packing by Morocco after they beat the Spaniards on penalties. Since then they destroyed Norway 3-0 at home but lost 2-0 away to Scotland in March. Of their last five non-World Cup games, they’ve won three and lost two, scoring eight while conceding five.

Italy obviously missed the World Cup but have won four of their last six games, losing the other two. Over recent away games they’ve also won three and lost two, scoring nine and conceding eight. All three of their most recent meetings have seen at least three goals and with both in ripe goal-scoring form, and conceding a few too, we should see at least three goals at the De Grolsch Veste.

Spain to Win
While the Spanish came unstuck against a determined Scotland since, Italy won’t be using the same tactics here. Yes, they’re masters of the dark arts but they don’t have the physicality of the Scots and will try to go toe-to-toe with their adversaries here. While there’s certainly creativity in the Italian squad they just don’t have the goalscorers that the Spanish have available to them. We’re likely looking at a 2-1, or 3-1 to Spain.
