Nottingham Forest to Win

Nottingham Forest simply must beat Southampton at home on Monday night if they wish to stay in the Premier League; there are no two ways about it. Victory for Forest will lift them out of the bottom three ahead of three difficult fixtures in the last three games of the season.

Forest beat Southampton in the reverse fixture – their only win on the road this season – and will be confident of doing the double over the Saints at the City Ground. Home form has been so important for Steve Cooper’s side this season and is the only reason they are in with a chance of staying up with four games to go.

The hosts have taken 24 of their 30 points this season at the City Ground and claimed a massive 3-1 win over Brighton in their last outing there.

Southampton, meanwhile, have not won in 11 league games in a run stretching back to the beginning of February and are almost certainly heading for the drop after losing against Bournemouth and Newcastle in successive games last week. This is a huge opportunity for Forest and they must seize it with both hands.

Over 4.5 Cards

Forest’s discipline leaves a lot to be desired. Steve Cooper’s side have picked up 77 yellow cards in their 34 league games to date, the most of any team in the Premier League and they only avoid being bottom of the disciplinary table by virtue of picking up no red cards throughout the season.

In their seven games since the international break, Forest have picked up 18 yellow cards at a rate of almost three per game. In a game of such magnitude, with tensions running high, it would not be surprising to see them at least match that recent average.

Southampton, on the other hand, have picked up 66 cards in 34 games this season at a rate of almost exactly two per game. The Saints have picked up 14 bookings in their last six games and will likely pick up a couple here. The teams shared four yellow cards when they met at St. Mary’s in January and can go at least one better on this occasion.

Nottingham Forest Over 4.5 Corners

Nottingham Forest boast the lowest corner average in the league this season, winning an average of just 3.4 corners per game. However, they will have to force the issue and will look to put Southampton under pressure from the first whistle as they seek a pivotal three points.

Southampton concede an average of 5.2 corners per game and have conceded 39 in six games since the international break. Forest are good value to significantly better their corner average here.

Armel Bella-Kotchap to Attempt 50 or More Passes

Not only do Forest boast the lowest corner average in the league, but they also boast the lowest possession average in the division. Cooper’s side average just 38.3% this season, significantly lower than Southampton’s average of 44.6%. It stands to reason, therefore, that Southampton will edge the possession statistics.

Armel Bella-Kotchap, who averages 38.6 passes per game this season, is good value to attempt 50 passes at the City Ground. The German defender completes about 80% of the passes he attempts, meaning he attempts an average of 48 passes per game. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see that average rise in a game that Southampton should enjoy the lion’s share of possession in.

Nottingham Forest to have 5 or More Shots on Target

Surprise, surprise – Forest also ranked second-last in terms of shots per game in the Premier League this season, averaging just 9.9 efforts per 90 minutes. However, they have been more adventurous of late, landing 13 shots on target in their last three games.

In their last five home games, Forest have registered 19 shots on target, a relatively decent record considering one of those games was a defeat against Manchester United when they failed to register a single effort on target.

Southampton, meanwhile, have faced 25 shots in their last six games and will present Forest with plenty of opportunities on Monday night.
