UFC 294 odds, Makhachev vs. Volkanovski and Usman vs. Chimaev best bets

Islam Makhachev (-250) vs. Alexander Volkanovski (+200) pick: Makhachev by submission (+250)

Volkanovski enters this fight as a replacement for Charles Oliveira on about 11 days notice. He reportedly needs to cut down 26 pounds in that time to make weight for the championship fight.

Yes, Volk is the champion of champions in this sport and we have no doubt that he’ll make weight, but cutting that much in such a short amount of time is likely to take a huge toll on his body.

Some thought the first fight between these two was razor-thin close, but after rewatching it over, Makhachev clearly won it – as the scorecards showed in the end.

Makhachev didn’t have much of an issue taking down the much smaller Volkanovski, securing four of his nine attempts. He also knocked the Australian down to one knee with a flurry of shots to the face in the first round, but we don’t think he’ll need to use his fists to finish the fight this time around.

Between the extreme weight cut and Makhachev’s grappling skills, we expect the lightweight champion to get the featherweight champion down on the mat and submit him – likely ending Volkanovski’s attempts at becoming a double champ.

Kamaru Usman (+260) vs. Khamzat Chimaev (-350) pick: Chimaev by KO/TKO (+200)

Former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is moving up to middleweight (also on short notice) to face Khamzat Chimaev, the undefeated “prodigy” who seems just a fight or two away from competing for a UFC belt.

Which belt that is remains to be seen, as Chimaev has fought at both welterweight and middleweight, but most recently struggled to cut down to 170 pounds for his last fight.

At 185, he’ll not only be heavier, but he’ll have a lot more power. Chimaev will likely want to keep this fight standing up considering Usman’s ground game, so we like Chimaev – in front of a home crowd of sorts – to finish the former champ and stay undefeated.
