After allowing his team a Thanksgiving break following their participation in the Charleston Classic, Craig Smith’s Utah had a mixed performance in the tournament, defeating Wake Forest but subsequently losing to Houston and St. John’s. Despite a commendable effort against Houston, the Utes faltered against St. John’s, showing uncharacteristic defensive lapses.

The team relies on the standout 7-footer Branden Carlson, who chose to stay with Utah and is averaging an impressive 19 points and nine rebounds per game. Guards Gabe Madsen and Rollie Worster need to contribute more offensively. Carlson’s positional shift, starting at the four, has been a strategic move, especially with the addition of 7-foot-1 center Lawson Lovering. However, there’s a call to utilize Carlson at the five and incorporate four guards in the lineup for better matchups.

On the other side, Saint Mary’s, initially predicted to outperform Gonzaga by fellow WCC coaches, has faced challenges, losing early-season games to Weber State, Washington, and San Diego State. The Gaels struggled offensively, with leading scorer Aidan Mahaney adjusting to a new role, and point guard Augustas Marciulionis adapting to a full-time point guard position.

Despite this, the Gaels exhibited improvement in a convincing win over Davidson, scoring 88 points. Marciulionis emerged as a key factor, scoring 18 points and providing eight assists. The frontcourt duo of Mitchell Saxen and Harry Wessels could enhance the paint presence and open up the perimeter offense. Despite offensive struggles, the Gaels remain elite on defense, a trademark of Randy Bennett’s successful coaching formula over the last two decades.

Pick: Saint Mary’s -4.5 -110
