Benfica to continue to impress

The Portuguese side have enjoyed terrific campaigns so far in both their domestic league and the Champions League, and this evening they will look to continue their fine run.

Benfica welcome Inter Milan to the Estadio da Luz for the first leg of their quarter-final and it is set to be another cracking match-up.

The hosts have lost just once at home in all competitions this season and are unbeaten on home turf in the Champions League despite facing the likes of PSG and Juventus in this season’s competition.

Benfica have won 13 of their past 15 matches in all competitions while Inter are winless in their previous six in all competitions and appear to be on somewhat of a downward trajectory.

The Italians have also failed to win any of their last six away matches and they were a little fortunate to get through against Benfica’s domestic rivals Porto in the round of 16.

While it should be another closely fought tie, we expect home advantage to play a big part in this one and for Benfica to earn a first-leg lead against Inter Milan.

Joao Mario has been in fine scoring form for Benfica so far this season, with 17 goals in the league.

He has also netted six times in the Champions League and tonight faces off against his former side, which should provide him with extra motivation to add to his tally.

Inter Milan have kept just one clean sheet away from home in their previous five matches in all competitions, so Mario looks likely to score, not least because the 30-year-old is also Benfica’s go-to penalty taker.

Marcelo Brozovic, a key player for Inter Milan, is expected to start this massive Champions League tie.

He averages 0.9 fouls per match in the competition (although that includes seven substitute appearances), and has been booked a remarkable seven times in 19 Serie A matches.

Up against the fast pace of Benfica, with the likes of Rafa Silva and Gonçalo Ramos, Brozovic is likely to be in for a difficult day.

The Croatian is not shy about committing tactical fouls, and was booked in Inter Milan’s recent Coppa Italia tie against Juventus for “unsportsmanlike conduct”. Expect him to be among the hard-hitting tackles at the Estadio da Luz.
