8-29

First-half round up: Biarritz 8-29 Wasps

Jimmy Gopperth’s penalty opened the scoring after a dozen minutes before Wasps scored their opening try of four in the first half. A dominant scrum laid the platform for Charlie Atkinson to attack the defence and offload to Malakai Fekitoa whose looping pass fell into Jacob Umaga’s hands to cross for his third try in four games.

Gopperth’s conversion struck a post and from the restart, Wasps infringed and Gilles Bosch got Biarritz on the scoreboard with a simple penalty kick.

It was Biarritz’s turn to make a hash of a kick-off as Joe Launchbury gobbled up the ball and Gabriel Oghre made metres to progress Wasps into the 22. Atkinson once more caused chaos with a probing dart, this time popping one handed to Alfie Barbeary to register his first of the game.

The young number eight’s second came ten minutes before the break as the home scrum crumbled once more, presenting the easiest of pick-ups and trots under the posts.

Wasps managed a fourth before the break as Zach Kibirige’s brilliant in-field chip bounced beautifully for Dan Robson to finish. Gopperth’s extras opened a 26-point lead.

Biarritz countered through a strong rolling maul that saw Lucas Peyresblanques peel off and power over. The last laugh of the half appeared to be Barbeary’s as he stomped over for what appeared to be a hat-trick sealing try, only for it to be chalked off by the television match official for a small knock-on in the build-up.

Half-time

It's been a superb defensive set from Wasps that is finally broken as Steeve Barry, weaves through a gap.

But a crossfield kick is overcooked.

It's half-time.

Wasps lead 29-8!

No try

Barbeary looks like he's got a third!!!!!

The no8 picked up form a ruck, pumped his legs and with Robson SCREAMING at him for an offload, Barbeary reaches over to complete a first-half hat-trick.

It's still being checked...

It's been ruled out. It's tight but it looked like Robson went to pick it up and made contact, then Barbeary picked up and went so a knock-on to a player in front.

TV footage wasn't conclusive for me.
