Biggest ever sports bet winner Mattress Mack loses £2.5million on latest gamble

Mattress Mack has been left with his head in his hands after losing £2.5million on a single sports bet - but it hasn't left a dent in that of his biggest ever win.

The 71-year-old flutter king splashed out $3m on TCU Horned Frogs to beat the Georgia Bulldogs in the college football championship playoff game having lost $6.2m (£5.1m) betting against Georgia last year.

Although that may sound like a damaging loss with Georgia winning the game 65-7, Mack will still be quite comfortable having won the biggest single sports bet in history thanks to the Houston Astros.

Real name Jim McIngvale, won £65m when he whacked £8.5m on the Houston Astros to win the MLB World Series - using his winnings to refund recent customers at his furniture stores as per a running promotion.

Mack is of course extremely passionate about sport and betting - despite sports betting being illegal in the state of Texas - which he funnily enough calls home.

The legalisation process is officially on hold as of the start of 2023, with support from the Dallas Cowboys among others to lift the statewide ban.

Mack has been known to travel to Las Vegas or Louisiana to place his wagers, recently losing £1m in the Kentucky Derby and £7m on the Cincinnati Bengals to win the Super Bowl.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Mack is worth in the region of £264m, with the man himself claiming he arrived in Texas with just £4,100.

Mack has also purchased a special 'gallery furniture disaster relief vehicle' in recent years to help out those in trouble from dangerous weather.

Speaking to Forbes back in April, Mack said of his furniture promotion: "It's about the strongest word in the English language which is 'free' 'free' 'free'.

"The opportunity that they might buy this and they might get it free brings them in."

Then added of his wife's opinion: "She said that I have a gambling problem. I said, 'No, I have a promotion problem'."
