Bayern Munich Are Aiming to Peak at Right Moment This Season

It can now be said that Bayern Munich have turned a corner. Julian Nagelsmann’s side hit the ground trudging when the Bundesliga finally resumed after World Cup 2022 and the customary winter break. Three 1-1 draws in a row allowed the likes of Union Berlin and Borussia Dortmund back into the Bundesliga title race.

Since the last of those ties against Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern have won both Bundesliga games they have contested. A 4-2 victory over Wolfsburg was especially impressive given that the champions were forced to play almost half of the match with 10 men after Joshua Kimmich’s red card.

Bayern then saw off the challenge of Bochum last weekend, running out 3-0 winners at the Allianz Arena. Then, in their most important game of 2023 so far, Nagelsmann’s team beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.

Bayern did not have everything their own way at the Parc des Princes. They dominated for the first hour and took the lead through Kingsley Coman early in the second half. 

But the introduction of Kylian Mbappe from the bench turned the tide in PSG’s favor. By the time the 90 minutes were up, the hosts could count themselves a little unfortunate to not have drawn level. Mbappe did put the ball in the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The tie is far from over and PSG will no doubt pose more of a sustained threat in next month’s second leg, when Mbappe should be fit to start. For now, though, it is advantage Bayern - and the confidence gained from that triumph in Paris could aid them in the Bundesliga over the next few weeks. 

Borussia Monchengladbach Are a Team in Transition This Term

After Borussia Monchengladbach finished 10th last season, Adi Hutter departed the club. The former Frankfurt head coach had not sufficiently impressed the hierarchy at Borussia-Park, who turned to Daniel Farke as their next manager.

The former Norwich City boss has been tasked with changing the team’s mindset and style of play. That was never going to happen instantly, particularly as erstwhile stalwarts Breel Embolo, Yann Sommer and Matthias Ginter have all sought pastures new in recent months.

“There is great unity at the club, with our fantastic fans,” Farke said earlier this season. “They simply want to see a Foals team that is courageous and aggressive. They want a team that is not always flawless, but that takes on their opponents with courage. We want to awaken this spirit.”

There is still work to be done in that regard. Gladbach head into this fixture in 10th place having been consistently inconsistent so far in 2022/23. Remarkably, they are yet to win back-to-back Bundesliga games. Within the space of two recent weeks they won 4-1 (against Hoffenheim) and lost 4-1 (against Hertha Berlin).

Gladbach’s chances of qualifying for the Europa League or the Europa Conference League are surely gone already. But this season was always going to be one of transition. Farke is still getting his ideas across to a squad which has undergone a fair amount of change in the last couple of years.

Upsetting Bayern would certainly give the Gladbach fans something to shout about, but this will be a tough match for the Foals. They would certainly settle for another 1-1 draw, having held the champions to that scoreline at the Allianz Arena in August.

Bayern Munich Should Have Too Much Quality for Gladbach Here

Bayern’s game plan against PSG paid off in midweek. Nagelsmann opted for a back three and preached the importance of control, with the German giants taking the ball away from PSG and restricting them to very few chances until Mbappe entered the fray.

Against Borussia Monchengladbach this weekend, we can expect Bayern to take a few more risks. They will certainly go straight on the attack at Borussia-Park, less worried by Gladbach’s ability to mount quick breaks than they were PSG’s.

That is not to say Farke’s men are incapable of causing Bayern problems, but the away team should prove too strong in this one. 

This match might not be quite as comfortable as the 3-0 triumph over Bochum last time out in the Bundesliga, but Bayern to win both halves - as they did in that game - looks like fantastic value with the best online sportsbooks.

The next few weeks could be crucial for Nagelsmann’s men. They face Union Berlin next weekend and although Bayern will be favorites, anyone who has watched the club from the capital this campaign knows that they cannot be written off.

Bayern will want to head into that match on the back of another positive result, and it is hard to see them failing to extend their winning streak to four games here.
