Breeders' Cup 2023 LIVE RESULTS: Auguste Rodin takes home the Turf victory as Classic order of finish revealed

The Sun

THIS year's Breeders' Cup has been one to remember, with some epic races taking place over the two-day horse racing spectacle at Santa Anita Park.

Horse Auguste Rodin won The Turf under rider Ryan Moore after triumphing in thrilling fashion.

And Irad Ortiz Jr won the 40th edition of the prestigious Breeders' Cup Classic on 5/2 White Abarrio.

After White Abarrio, Derma Sotogake came in second, followed by Proxy and Arabian Knight.

Frankie Dettori tasted a Breeders' Cup victory for the first time since 2018 after riding Inspiral to glory in the Filly & Mare Turf.

In the Dirt Mile, tears flowed as Cody's Wish survived a dramatic stewards' inquiry to win his final ever race.

    • Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile - Cody's Wish
    • Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf - Inspiral
    • Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare - Goodnight Olive
    • Breeders' Cup Mile - Master Of The Seas
    • Breeders' Cup Distaff - Idiomatic
    • Breeders' Cup Turf - Auguste Rodin
    • Breeders' Cup Classic - White Abarrio
    • Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint - Nobals
    • Breeders' Cup Sprint - Elite Power
  • White Abarrio was a brilliant winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic for trainer Richard Dutrow.

He returned from a ten-year ban earlier this year after being charged with 'numerous medication and administration violations' in his barn.

Respected UK horse racing pundit Angus McNae said Dutrow winning left a 'sour taste' in his mouth.

It was a second Breeders' Cup Classic for Dutrow.

  • Frankie Dettori provided an ‘impossible’ Breeders’ Cup moment to leave his boss John Gosden stunned.

Dettori looked cooked when Warm Heart and Ryan Moore kicked away in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Someone forgot to tell the Italian, however, as he surged down the outside to score – leaving his boss totally stunned.

Gosden said: “She had the class to nail it on the line. I’ve probably been running her over the wrong trip!

“It’s nigh-on impossible to come from where she did to win.”

  • 1 White Abarrio 5/2

    2 Derma Sotogake 20/1

    3 Proxy 16/1

    4 Arabian Knight 5/1

    5 Ushba Tesoro 7/2

    6 Bright Future 12/1

    7 Senor Buscador 33/1

    8 Dreamlike 25/1

    9 Zandon 8/1

    10 Saudi Crown 15/2

    11 Clapton 40/1

    12 Missed The Cut 50/1

  • Aidan O’Brien was awestruck by Ryan Moore’s Turf-winning ride on Auguste Rodin.

He said: “O’Brien was amazed by Moore’s ride and said: “Incredible. Ryan knew. What an incredible ride.

“You can see the pace he has but Ryan gave him a brilliant ride.

“He got to the front early but he’s a super horse.

“We’re so lucky to have him. I’m so delighted for the lads.”

  • Mawj looked to have the Breeders' Cup Mile sown up, only for William Buick and Master Of The Seas to come from a different state to land the spoils.

It was a truly incredible ride by the British champion jockey, who downed his Godolphin stablemate in the process.

  • Could we see the Turf winner in the Classic in 2024?

Well, it's not been ruled out!

Asked if he will run again next year, Magnier, son of legendary Coolmore chief John, said: "We've been thinking about it for a while.

"There's a lot of things we could do. He could stand at stud here in the US, or in Europe... and there's a strong possibility we keep him in training next year."

Trainer Aidan O'Brien said he was amazed how good Auguste Rodin was on the dirt and asked if he could go for next year's Classic, Magnier replied: "How fun would that be?"

  • White Abarrio was given a peach of a ride to win the Breeders' Cup Classic for Irad Ortiz Jr and Richard Dutrow.

  • Well, what an incredible two days of racing at Santa Anita that was.

The Breeders' Cup always gives us top-quality racing, but there were so many stories that made this year special too.

From Cody's Wish, to Big Evs on day one, there was no shortage of drama and emotion.

You can find a recap of all the results below. Thanks for tagging along for all the live coverage!

    • Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile – Cody’s Wish
    • Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf – Inspiral
    • Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare – Goodnight Olive
    • Breeders’ Cup Mile – Master Of The Seas
    • Breeders’ Cup Distaff – Idiomatic
    • Breeders’ Cup Turf – Auguste Rodin
    • Breeders’ Cup Classic – White Abarrio
    • Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint – Nobals
    • Breeders’ Cup Sprint – Elite Power
  • There was a certain inevitability about that.

Elite Power tanked his way into contention and Irad Ortiz Jr was always oozing confidence.

That's back-to-back wins in the Sprint for Elite Power, who beat old rival Gunite very comfortably.

  • You'll struggle to find a horse more prolific than 13-time winner The Chosen Vron.

He's only tasted four defeats in his career and arrives here on an eight-race win sequence.

He gained his first Grade 1 success at Del Mar last time - can he double his top-level tally?

  • And just like that, we're at the final race of the 2023 Breeders' Cup.

It's more blink and you'll miss it stuff, as it's the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

  • It's firsts all around, as jockey Gerardo Corrales wins on his first ride in California, while trainer Larry Rivelli has won his first Breeders' Cup race.

Live In The Dream looked set to collect approaching the furlong but he was gobbled up and slid out of the placings.

It was a ballsy move by Corrales to take the rails route but it paid off in no uncertain terms - bravo!

  • Big Evs won the Juvenile Turf Sprint yesterday for trainer Mick Appleby - could Live In The Dream give Britain the turf sprint double?

Adam West is a smaller British trainer based near Epsom and Live In The Dream is a speedball who will fly the gates.

He'll love a drop to this distance and given how the pace has held up today, he's got an excellent chance of clinging on.

  • After that incredible performance by White Abarrio, we now switch gear to a pair of sprints.

First up is the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, where Live In The Dream hopes to give another lesser-known British stable a red letter day.

  • Ushba Tesoro looked to have a huge chance of giving Japan a red letter day, but it was Derma Sotogake who almost flew the flag.

He was second in the Kentucky Derby earlier this year and did himself proud once again with his second-place in the Classic.

  • It's a second Breeders' Cup Classic for trainer Richard Dutrow Jr, who returned from a ten-year ban earlier this year.

He had his licence revoked in October 2011, with the New York State Racing and Wagering Board citing a long history of violations.

  • It was always a possibility and unfortunately for Arabian Knight and Saudi Crown, they've ended up cutting eachothers throats.

White Abarrio was always in the best position under Irad Ortiz Jr and the closers simply had too much to do despite the hot pace.

An emotional Ortiz Jr is in tears as he's interviewed on the way back in, what a moment for the Puerto Rican - it's his second Classic win.
