Brentford striker Ivan Toney charged for second time for breaking betting rules

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been charged for a second time for breaking the FA's betting rules.

Toney was initially charged last month with 232 alleged breaches, but a further 30 have now taken the total to 262. A statement from the FA reads: "Ivan Toney has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA's Betting Rules.

"In addition to the previous charge, it is alleged that the Brentford FC forward breached FA Rule E8 a further 30 times between 14 March 2017 and 18 February 2019. Ivan Toney has until Wednesday 4 January 2023 to provide a response."

Brentford have said they will make no further comment at this time, adding: "Our private discussions with Ivan and his legal representatives on this matter continue."

The 26-year-old forced his way into the England set-up earlier this year with his performances in the Premier League, scoring 10 goals and assisting two. But he missed out on Gareth Southgate's 26-man World Cup squad.

He's set to return to action on Boxing Day when Brentford host Tottenham in the first Premier League game after the international break.

When news of an FA probe broke in November, Toney wrote on Twitter: "I'm aware of a story about me in a national newspaper today.

"I have been assisting the Football Association with their enquiries and will not be making any comment until such investigation has reached its conclusion."

He faces a lengthy ban if the charges relating to FA rule E8, which forbids players from betting on games or sharing privileged information for the purposes of betting, are proven.

England and Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier was banned for 10 weeks in December 2020 for sharing information about his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid for others to bet on.

Former Three Lions striker Daniel Sturridge was hit with a four-month ban from football for breaching betting rules back in 2019, while Joey Barton was banned for 18 months, reduced to 13 on appeal, in 2017 after admitting to placing 1,260 football-related bets over a 10-year period.
