Brighton & Hove Albion vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool had several reasons to feel aggrieved after last weekend’s 2-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.

Curtis Jones’ red card in the first half was comprehensible but contentious. Diogo Jota’s sending-off after the break appeared to be more clear-cut at the time, but the Premier League's Independent Key Match Incidents Panel has since argued it was an incorrect decision.

The most controversial incident, of course, was Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal. It turns out that human error was behind the mistake, as the video assistant referee misinterpreted the on-field decision when he completed his review.

It was a terrible blunder and one which has led to serious questions being asked of the entire VAR system.

The fallout has rumbled on all week. On Wednesday Jurgen Klopp gave his view, in which he opined that the fairest solution would be to stage the match again.

“Probably some people don’t want me to say it, not as the manager of Liverpool but much more as a football person, I think the only outcome should be a replay. That’s how it is,” he said ahead of his team’s 2-0 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League.

“It probably will not happen. The argument against that will probably be if you open that gate then everybody will ask for it. I think the situation is that unprecedented that a replay would be the right thing.”

Despite the ongoing sense of injustice, Liverpool must now move on - starting with Sunday’s match at the Amex Stadium.

📝 Brighton & Hove Albion vs Liverpool betting tips

Arsenal face Manchester City at 4.30pm on Sunday, but this 2pm kick-off could be just as entertaining.

Liverpool to win - 6/5 (bet365)

Given everything that went against them, Liverpool could be immensely proud of their performance against Tottenham last time out.

The hosts had a man advantage from the 26th minute and spent the final quarter of the match playing against nine players.

Even so, it took them until the final moments of the game to score the winning goal against a stubborn Liverpool side.

It was their first defeat of the campaign, but in a strange way it only strengthened the view that Liverpool could be serious contenders this season.

Only time will tell if anyone is able to stick with Manchester City, but Klopp’s men will draw confidence from the fact they have done so in the past.

Indeed, Liverpool are the only team in the Premier League to have finished above Pep Guardiola’s side since Chelsea topped the table in 2017.

Playing in the Europa League can sometimes be a disadvantage, but on this occasion Liverpool have had a less taxing week than their opponents.

Brighton were also in action on Thursday night, but unlike the Reds they had to travel abroad for their clash with Marseille, which was a tougher game than Liverpool’s meeting with Union Saint-Gilloise.

Brighton drew 2-2 in France, but they could fall to a second consecutive Premier League defeat this weekend.

Over 3.5 goals - 10/11 (bet365)

Brighton are the most entertaining team in the Premier League right now.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side are the leading goalscorers in the division, having put the ball in the net on 19 occasions in their first seven outings.

But only Sheffield United, Burnley and Bournemouth - the bottom three heading into the weekend - have had their backline breached more often than Brighton.

The 10 matches involving the Seagulls in all competitions this term have contained 43 goals, which works out at a remarkable average of 4.3 per game.

It is hard to see Sunday’s showdown with Liverpool bucking that trend. Klopp’s team are attack-minded and rank joint-second in the league for expected goals, which shows how adept they have been at creating chances.

For all their dazzling football, Brighton do struggle to shut down opposition attacks. They shipped six goals to Aston Villa in a demolition job last weekend. A few weeks prior they conceded three to West Ham United.

Brighton have now gone 14 competitive games without a clean sheet since a 3-0 win at Arsenal in mid-May. This promises to be a goal-laden affair.

Luis Diaz to score any time - 15/2 (bet365)

Jota will serve a one-game ban after his dismissal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while Cody Gakpo is out for an unspecified amount of time after picking up an injury last weekend.

Jota started ahead of Diaz against Union Saint-Gilloise, but the Colombian will almost certainly be in the starting XI on Sunday.

He looks like a good value bet to score any time. The bookies prefer Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Evan Ferguson, but one could argue that Diaz is overpriced.

The former Porto man is not always the most reliable finisher in front of goal, but he still regularly gets himself into scoring positions.

Against a Brighton backline that cannot keep clean sheets, Diaz can put the Tottenham controversy behind him by finding the net here.
