Liverpool vs Union Saint-Gilloise predictions

The story rumbles on and on.

We have not heard the last of the fallout from Saturday’s Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, in which the Reds had a goal disallowed after a catastrophic human error.

The incident has been covered extensively elsewhere, so we will not go deeper here. But in the midst of the drama, Liverpool have not received enough credit for the way they performed against Spurs.

The failure to award Luis Diaz’s goal was not the only refereeing decision that went against Jurgen Klopp’s side, although the other two episodes were nowhere near as contentious.

Curtis Jones was sent off after a challenge on Yves Bissouma in the first half, while Diogo Jota was dismissed after the break for two yellow cards.

In the circumstances, then, it was a heroic performance from Liverpool. They actually looked pretty comfortable with nine men, only to be undone deep into second-half stoppage time.

It has been hard to avoid the controversy in recent days, but Klopp will not want to dwell on the issue for too long.

This is a big week for Liverpool, who face a tricky test against Brighton & Hove Albion a few days after this meeting with Union Saint-Gilloise.

We do not yet know how seriously Liverpool are prepared to take the Europa League this season, with the Premier League their obvious priority.

But the Reds should be able to negotiate this group even while holding something back for the bread and butter of domestic football.

📝 Liverpool vs Union Saint-Gilloise betting tips

Liverpool should prove too strong for Union Saint-Gilloise when the two teams go head-to-head on Thursday night.

Liverpool to score more than 2.5 goals - 8/11 (bet365)

The fact that Liverpool managed to score even one goal on Saturday was an achievement, not to mention the fact they actually had the ball in the net twice.

Klopp will be pleased with how his team has performed so far this term, especially going forward.

A return of 16 goals in seven Premier League games works out at an average of 2.29 per match.

Bear in mind, too, that Liverpool have had a tough schedule on the road with trips to Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham already.

The Reds have played nine games in all competitions and have scored three goals or more in six of them. Their four matches at Anfield have produced a total of 12 goals.

That is one reason to expect the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota to fill their boots on Thursday.

Another is that Union Saint-Gilloise are struggling to keep opposition forward lines quiet.

Alexander Blessin’s charges are top of the Belgian Pro League, but they have the seventh-worst defensive record in the division.

Both teams to score - 10/11 (bet365)

While there is no doubt that Liverpool have been productive in attack so far this season, there is room for improvement at the other end.

The Reds rank sixth for expected goals against in the Premier League - by no means a terrible ranking, but one that might not be sustainable if they are to challenge for the title.

Meanwhile their nine games in all competitions have produced just one clean sheet. That is certainly something Klopp needs to improve.

Liverpool should ultimately prove too strong for Union Saint-Gilloise at Anfield, but the Belgian side will fancy their chances in following in the footsteps of Chelsea, Bournemouth, Newcastle, LASK, Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United, Leicester City and Tottenham.

Goals at both ends would be an astute pick.

Darwin Nunez to score any time - 4/5 (bet365)

Another negative to come out of the loss to Tottenham at the weekend was the injury suffered by Cody Gakpo.

The Dutchman actually managed to score Liverpool’s equaliser while hobbling about, but he was unable to continue after the ball hit the net.

Gakpo’s knee issue is likely to keep him out until after the October international break at the earliest, so he will play no part in this one.

Nunez is therefore in line to start for Liverpool, just as he did in the 3-1 victory over LASK.

It is fair to say that the Uruguay international had his highs and lows in his debut campaign at Liverpool.

But while he never looked like the most polished centre-forward, Nunez frequently made life difficult for opposition centre-backs.

The Union Saint-Gilloise defence will be in for a battle on Thursday, with their task made more difficult by the fact that Nunez is far from Liverpool’s only attacking threat.

The former Benfica man was on penalty-taking duties against LASK, so that provides another possible route to goal.

Of course, there is a chance that Nunez will be held back for the Brighton game, but fatigue is unlikely to be an issue for a player who has not been involved in every match so far this season.

That means Klopp would probably be willing to use Nunez on Thursday even if he has a big role in mind for him at the weekend.
