Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester City predictions

A party atmosphere can be expected at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday night.

Both sets of supporters have something to celebrate. Manchester City wrapped up the Premier League title last weekend, while Brighton have just qualified for the Europa League - their first foray into continental competition.

City secured their fifth championship in the last six years without kicking a ball. Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest on Saturday handed Pep Guardiola’s side the prize.

Brighton got the job done on their own terms. A 3-1 triumph over Southampton moved them three points clear of Aston Villa.

Those two teams will meet on Sunday, but Brighton’s far superior goal difference means it would take a miracle for Unai Emery’s men to displace them in sixth spot.

City’s season is not done yet. They will face Manchester United and Inter in the FA Cup and Champions League finals respectively next month.

Brighton’s race is almost run, but there is an outside chance that they could yet overtake Liverpool in fifth.

Even if they do not, this has been a superb season for the Seagulls. They lost their manager in September but barely skipped a beat, with Roberto De Zerbi taking the team he inherited from Graham Potter to another level.

Needless to say, City have also been mightily impressive. Guardiola’s team had a few stutters along the way, but they have been virtually flawless in recent months.

With all that in mind, this promises to be an entertaining encounter at the Amex.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester City betting tips

Manchester City can extend their winning run to 13 matches against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday.

Manchester City to win - 4/5 (Spreadex)

There is no doubt Manchester City have changed the Premier League during the Guardiola era.

They have not only influenced the style of play we see in England’s top flight, but they have also redefined what it takes to be crowned champions.

Arsenal have ultimately fallen short in this year’s title race. But they can still reach 84 points - a tally that would have brought them the prize in each of the first seven Premier League seasons (if we use points-per-game to compare the current campaign to those with 42 matches).

Yet even Arsenal’s greatest season since the Invincibles of 2003/04 has not been enough for Mikel Arteta’s men to keep pace with the City juggernaut.

Guardiola’s side have claimed the title on the back of a 12-match winning run. They have taken 43 points from the last 45 available. That is an astonishing level of consistency in what is often said to be the toughest league in Europe.

Brighton are among the most difficult opponents in the division, but even they will struggle to halt the champions in this rearranged fixture.

Even if City name a weakened side, as they did in Sunday’s 1-0 win against Chelsea, they can make it 13 victories on the bounce here.

Over 3.5 goals - 5/4 (Spreadex)

Brighton and Manchester City do not have identical styles of play, but De Zerbi and Guardiola certainly share some similarities as coaches.

These are the two teams with the highest average possession in the Premier League this season. They also rank first (Brighton) and second (City) for shots per game and shots on target per game.

De Zerbi and Guardiola are attack-minded managers. That, plus the fact the pressure is off for both sides, means we should be treated to a thrilling match on the south coast.

Relative to the other sides in the division, Brighton have been better on the road than on their own patch in 2022/23. They sit fourth in the away table but only ninth in the home one.

Yet few teams score more goals in front of their own fans than the Seagulls. Only City, Arsenal and Liverpool have averaged more per home match.

City, for their part, have introduced the ball to the net 61 times in their last 25 outings in all competitions.

There is ample evidence to suggest this will be a game full of goals.

Julian Alvarez to score any time - 13/10 (Spreadex)

What a season this has been for Julian Alvarez.

A World Cup winner in the winter - and the forward finished as the tournament’s third-highest goalscorer in Qatar - Alvarez could now win a treble at club level.

The Argentina international notched the winner against Chelsea last time out and that should be enough for him to retain his place in the XI in midweek.

Whether he plays instead of Erling Haaland or behind him, Alvarez will cause Brighton all manner of problems.

The 23-year-old possesses technical ability, physical dynamism and tactical intelligence. That is a lethal combination for any attacking player.

"With Julian, every time he plays he gives us everything. He got the assist for the penalty and after [he] did the extraordinary goal. To have two strikers is an incredible weapon,” Guardiola said after the recent 2-1 win against Fulham.
