Bruce Arena resigns as coach of New England Revolution

Bruce Arena announced Saturday evening that he was resigning his position as the coach of the New England Revolution through a statement released by the team.

The announcement comes just over a month after Arena was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into workplace misconduct.

“After much soul searching, I have decided to resign my position as Head Coach and Sporting Director of the New England Revolution,” Arena said in the statement.

Arena thanked Robert and Jonathan Kraft in his statement before addressing the investigation.

“The investigation has been a hard and difficult process, for me and my family, but hearing from so many who have been part of my career truly has been gratifying and has helped make this decision easier.

“Finally, I know that I have made some mistakes and moving forward, I plan to spend time reflecting on this situation and taking corrective steps to address what has transpired. And while this has not been an easy decision, I am confident that it is in the best interest of both the New England Revolution organization and my family that we part ways at this time.”

Arena, who was in his fourth season with the Revs, allegedly made “insensitive and inappropriate remarks” that led to the league opening the investigation and the team placing him on leave.

Major League Soccer also released a statement Saturday night adding that Arena will need to submit a petition to MLS Commissioner Don Garber if he wants to work for the league in the future.

“As a result of the investigation, which confirmed certain of these allegations, should Arena wish to pursue future employment within MLS, he must first submit a petition to the Commissioner.

“MLS is committed to safe and welcoming work environments and expects all employees of the League and its clubs to conduct themselves appropriately in the workplace.”

Arena is the winningest coach in Major League Soccer history and is the most decorated coach in league history with five MLS Cups. The 71-year-old won the MLS Coach of the Year Award four times.

Curt Onalfo will remain the interim Sporting Director, while Richie Williams will remain the interim Head Coach through the end of the 2023 season.

“The New England Revolution have accepted the resignation of Bruce Arena,” the team said in its own statement. “We wish Bruce well and thank him for his contribution to the team.”

The announcement came just as the Revolution played to a 1-1 draw with Minnesota United FC Saturday night. The team will play two more matches on the road before returning home to face Charlotte FC on Sept. 30.
