Bunbury Cup 2023 Betting Tips and Predictions

At 16:00 on Saturday afternoon, following the Group 2 action, we have one of the best handicaps of the season. It’s the Bunbury Cup, run over seven furlongs.

20 runners are set to go to post for this race, which means that finding the winner is a tough task, but this is certainly a race that punters like to get stuck into and the betting turnover will be high. Can we find the winner of this high-class handicap? Let’s give it a go.

Our Betting Tips and Predictions for the Bunbury Cup

After sifting through the field in a bid to pinpoint a few decent bets ahead of this contest, here are our top tips:

Our Best Prediction: Awaal (each-way) @ 8/1

Whatever your thoughts on this race, it’s hard to ignore the claims of Awaal, who has lots going for him. The lightly raced runner showed that he was probably a bit too good for Class 3 level when bolting up at Redcar back in October of last year, while he stepped forward after 159 days off to finish a very good second (of 22) on heavy ground at Doncaster. Didn’t quite fire in Listed company in France next time out, but he left that run well behind when finishing third in the 30-runner Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. Such form is incredibly difficult to ignore.

The handicapper has left his mark alone, so he looks set to lay down another bold challenge. It’s a sizable plus that he goes on all types of ground too, as several in here are likely to see their chances decrease what with the rain getting into the ground. All the time 8/1 is available, I’ll be on each way.

Our Each Way Prediction: Star Of Orion (each-way) @ 12/1

This horse hasn’t run since finishing second over course and distance back May, which could be telling. This runner likes it here at Newmarket having filled the runner-up spot twice over C&D since returning from a lay-off. Sure, he finished behind Montassib last time out, but he’s now better of at the weights with that rival, while he ought to be suited by the likely stronger pace here. Comes into the race for a trainer who has had his string in decent form of late and looks nicely weighted down at the bottom.

Our Dark Horse Prediction: Probe (each-way) @ 20/1

If you’re looking for something at more sizable odds ahead of this renewal of the Bunbury Cup, then why not take a chance on Probe. The five-year-old didn’t run well at Royal Ascot, finishing well down the field in Wokingham Stakes, but he was never ideally placed and shouldn’t be entirely discounted on that basis.

Before that effort, he ran a good race at Epsom, while he was a winner at this venue prior to that. The way in which he got the job done over six furlongs on that occasions suggests that he’s well worth a crack over seven furlongs here, while he’ll certainly appreciate any softening ground.
