Hamburg have given themselves a mountain to climb in Monday night's Bundesliga relegation play-off but their goalscoring record at home suggests they'll make a good fist of it.

No team has been through it quite like Hamburg in recent seasons. Since their relegation in 2018, they've come within touching distance of a Bundesliga return in five consecutive seasons.

They could only finish fourth in each of their first three seasons in the second tier, narrowly missing out on a play-off place where they'd met the third-lowest side in Bundesliga.

Last year, they finally managed to make it and things started well with a surprise 1-0 away win against Hertha Berlin. Days later, they lost the second leg 2-0 at home.

They even came within seconds of automatic promotion this season, doing their bit and winning 1-0 on the final day of the season.

Their dream of making it back to the big time was quickly on the ropes when Konstantinos Mavropanos opened the scoring inside a minute. Stuttgart cruised to a 3-0 victory and Hamburg were reduced to 10 men.

While we managed to identify a winning bet in the first leg, we did expect the visitors to contribute to the scoring. Stuttgart conceded in their final 13 Bundesliga matches.

Hamburg play with a swagger at home and have won eight of their last 10 matches at Volksparkstadion. During that run, they've found the net 30 times.

They'll need to maintain that average of three goals per game if they're to turn this around, but the problem will be keeping a clean sheet.

Their style gives teams a chance, as demonstrated by the 13 goals they've conceded in those 10 matches, and Stuttgart have found the net in their last 11 in all competitions.

It's going to be extremely tough to turn things around, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see the hosts find a goal, or two, or even three. The hard part will be keeping Stuttgart out.

The Bundesliga side should do enough to retain their top-flight status, but a byproduct of Hamburg's attempt to fight back could be an entertaining game full of goals.
