Burnley vs Manchester United predictions

It is not a good sign that an away game against Burnley in September has taken on such significance for Manchester United.

This is supposed to be a run-of-the-mill fixture for a club of their size, one that they would usually expect to win without getting out of second gear.

That is no disrespect to Burnley, but the fact the promoted team have picked up just one point from a possible 12 so far indicates that they are not the strongest opposition the Premier League has to offer.

And yet there is no guarantee that United will come out on top this weekend. The winning feeling has only occasionally been experienced by the club's players this season: just two of their six matches in all competitions have finished with the Red Devils triumphant.

Even those two wins had an element of good fortune to them. Wolverhampton Wanderers were the better team at Old Trafford on the opening weekend but lost 1-0. Nottingham Forest stormed into a 2-0 lead at the same stadium but went on to suffer a 3-2 defeat.

More recently, Erik ten Hag's side have lost three matches on the bounce, to Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion and Bayern Munich. Another reverse here would lead to more questions being asked of the manager.

United need to snap out of this funk as soon as possible. Competition for the top four is stronger than ever, and they cannot afford to fall too far behind the Champions League qualification places even at this early stage of proceedings

📝 Burnley vs Manchester United betting tips

Manchester United should come out on top at Turf Moor despite their poor start to the 2023/24 campaign.

Manchester United to win - 10/3 (BetUK)

Burnley finally got off the mark for the season on Monday night, as they drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Three straight defeats before that represent a wake-up call after a near-flawless season in the Championship last time out.

Vincent Kompany was keen to take the positives from his side’s display in the East Midlands last time out.

“You have to fight for every point in this league, but there are a range of teams we can compete with from what I have observed in the four games,” he said.

"We have not had a complete performance yet, but today was at least even and depending on which side of the fence you sit, you feel you deserved the win.

"If we can keep improving, our team has so much progress to go and that is the exciting part. In the future there is room for much further improvement."

Burnley will look to take advantage of United’s recent struggles, but avoiding defeat will still be a big ask.

The Clarets were much too open in their previous home games against Manchester City, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

Given their pace in transition via the likes of Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Højlund, United should have some joy up against Burnley’s loose out-of-possession shape.

Rasmus Højlund to score any time - 6/4 (Betfair)

Højlund scored Manchester United’s first goal against Bayern Munich in midweek.

Had his team not conceded a contentious penalty a few moments later, the Dane’s strike could have been the one that got United back into the game.

We have still not seen much of Højlund following his summer switch from Atalanta, but the early signs are promising.

He proved himself to be a handful on his debut as a second-half substitute against Arsenal before the international break.

The United fans booed the decision to take Højlund off against Brighton last weekend, before his maiden goal for the club at the Allianz Arena.

Højlund is by no means the finished product but his talent is clear for all to see and this weekend could bring his first strike in the Premier League.

Burnley have conceded a division-high 12 goals despite having a game in hand on most other sides, so United and their central striker should get plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net.

Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score - 10/11 (bet365)

Despite their general struggles, Burnley have at least carried a threat in attack since promotion.

They fashioned a few promising openings against Manchester City despite drawing a blank on the opening night, before finding the net in four consecutive games in all competitions.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have been defensively porous throughout. They are now averaging 2.33 goals against per game in 2023/24, having conceded at least twice in each of their last five outings.

Burnley do not have as gifted an attack as that of Tottenham, Arsenal, Brighton or Bayern Munich, but United’s defensive woes should aid the home team here.

A clean sheet could elude both sides in this one, with the Red Devils surely capable of notching at least a couple of goals at Turf Moor.

This is a wager that would have paid out in United’s last four encounters, as well as in two of Burnley’s last three Premier League games.
