Patrick Mahomes’ Injury Status

The biggest story of this one is the status of Patrick Mahomes’ high-ankle sprain he suffered in the divisional round against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mahomes was favoring his injured ankle throughout the second half of last week’s contest, which brought a lot of questions to the forefront regarding this matchup.

Some of those questions have been put to rest, for now at least:

Mahomes has been a participant in each day of practice this week. In addition, Mahomes has not been seen with a boot or walking with any evident limp.

Seeing Mahomes relatively healthy is a massive win for Chiefs fans, Chiefs backers, and NFL fans in general.

Line Movement

As one could imagine, the line was heavily contingent on the status of Mahomes and his ankle.

The opening spread for this Sunday’s tilt was the Bengals laying 1.5 points. The line climbed as high as a pricey 2.5 points favoring Cincy. However, after practice videos surfaced and the encouraging reports surrounding his health, the line dipped back down between a pick ‘em and even the Chiefs as a slight favorite.

As we approach kickoff, there are some health concerns to monitor. The Bengals will be without cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, but that has been the case throughout the Bengals’ winning streak. Furthermore, the Bengals will be without at three starting offensive linemen. La’el Collins suffered a season-ending injury against the New England Patriots and will miss this contest, while Alex Cappa and Jonah Williams are also out heading into this one.

The Bengals were without all three last week, and they shut down the Bills’ defensive line. Sunday may be a taller task with Frank Clark on the edge and arguably the league’s top interior defensive lineman, 1st team All-Pro Chris Jones.

Offensive Playmakers to Watch

Not only is the quarterback matchup fun, but the weapons in this game are truly extraordinary.

The Bengals’ offense showcases a plethora of talent at their offensive skill positions: 2021 5th overall pick Ja’Marr Chase leads the way. Chase was a second-team All-Pro in his rookie season. In his second year, Chase eclipsed 1,000 yards, despite missing five games of action.

Chase is complemented by Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd, and running back Joe Mixon. Don’t forget about tight end Hayden Hurst, who has been a solid addition to the Bengals.

On the other side, future first-ballot Hall-of-Fame tight end Travis Kelce has shown time and time again that he defies all preconceived notions of deteriorating with old age. At age 33, Kelce was a first-team All-Pro, finishing third in the NFL with 110 catches and second in the NFL with 12 receiving touchdowns. Kelce was integral in last week’s contest, catching 14 passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite not having any big-name talents on the outside, Kansas City’s receiving corps has generated plenty of production in the first year without Tyreek Hill. Juju Smith-Schuster, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdez-Scantling are all names to watch in this one. Additionally, speedster Mecole Hardman may be back for the Chiefs. Hardman has been out of the lineup for quite some time due to an injury sustained on his pelvis. Hardman is listed as questionable.
