Capitals vs Senators predictions

The Ottawa Senators picked up an impressive win on Sunday, defeating the Lightning 5-2 thanks to a two-goal, three-point performance from captain Brady Tkachuk and a multi-point effort from offseason signing Vladimir Tarasenko.

Ottawa has been firing on all cylinders offensively to start the season, scoring five goals in back-to-back contests while averaging 4.33 goals per game, tied for the second-best mark in the league.

However, things haven’t been going as smoothly for the Washington Capitals, who were shut out by the Penguins in their season opener. Washington did manage to claw a victory over Calgary on Monday, though, skating to a 3-2 win in the shootout as goaltender Darcy Kuemper stopped 38 of 40 shots.

Tkachuk (5 points), Jakub Chychrun (4 points), Tarasenko (4 points), and four others are producing at least a point per game to start the season for the Sens, who look to be boasting one of the NHL’s deepest offenses this year.

With Ottawa scoring five goals in two straight games and recording at least four tallies in four of its last six meetings against Washington, I’ll look for an impressive Sens offense to stay hot and hit the Over on 3.5 goals as my best bet tonight.

My best bet: Senators Over 3.5 goals (-125 at SIA)

Brady Tkachuk anytime goalscorer

We’ll lock in on the Senators for tonight’s same-game parlay, taking Ottawa to cash the Over on 3.5 goals and win, while also banking on Tkachuk to score a goal.

The Caps have historically enjoyed success in this matchup, winning seven of their last 10 meetings against the Sens, but times have changed. Ottawa is looking like one of the better up-and-coming teams in the league while Washington is slowing down, so I’ll give the edge to the Senators in this matchup pretty much every time.

Tkachuk has netted two goals in back-to-back outings and co-leads the team with 14 shots on net, so he’s got as good of a chance as anyone to score tonight.

Capitals vs Senators moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Senators enter tonight’s game as the home favorite at -150 on the moneyline while the total opened at 6.5 goals.

Ottawa has missed the playoffs for six straight years but looks to finally be finished with its rebuild after adding plenty of talent over the past couple of years with names. Meanwhile, Washington has completely gone the other way with an aging core led by 38-year-old Alex Ovechkin, who really doesn’t have much support around him.

That said, I think we’ll see the Senators carry the play tonight so I am definitely giving them the edge in this one.

These clubs have generally played higher-scoring games with the Over cashing in six of their last nine meetings. The Over is 2-0-1 in Ottawa’s three games to start this season and while Washington has had a slow start offensively this year, the Over is 13-5 in its last 18 contests dating back to last season.

The Caps will likely need to have their best offensive game of the season to get this game to cash the Over, but I have faith that they can pull it off.
