Day 4 of the Cheltenham Festival brings a mixture of emotions. The first is an uncontrollable joy because it’s finally Gold Cup day, but it is then tinged with sadness because, after the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle, we have to wait until March 2025 to do it all again.

But before we get down in the dumps, there are 7 races to get through for our Cheltenham Day 4 tips.

Cheltenham day 4 race schedule

Before we get into the Cheltenham day 4 tips, let’s remind ourselves of the races and times for day 4 of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival.

Cheltenham day 4 tips and predictions

The final day of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival is here, but with the final 7 races of the Festival, lies 7 winners.

So let’s not waste any more time and dive into the best Cheltenham betting tips for day 4 of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival with from the best horse racing bookies in the UK.

Gold Cup tips

The blue ribbon event, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, no greater race gives your horse the chance to create horse racing immortality. From Arkle to Kauto Star we have seen legends made and dreams shattered in the blink of an eye, but who will come out on top in this year's Cheltenham Gold Cup?

Will defending champion Galopin Des Champs add his name to dule Gold Cup winners, or will the King have to hand over his crown?

For me, it will be back-to-back Gold Cups for the most impressive winner of a Gold Cup since Kauto Star.

Galopin Des Champs has everything, and at 5/4 I still think there is value to be had.

As they are sent on their way for the Gold Cup there will be no worries about race position for Galopin. You can position him anywhere in a race, out the back or up with the pace, he has won Grade 1s in both situations.

He travels behind the bridle, meaning he is only useless with the necessary energy needed at the time. But when his jockey Paul Townend wants him to come alive, the response is immediate.

You will have the ‘pundits’ on the Cheltenham Festival Preview circuit trying to crab him just for the sake of taking him on, but let's not make this any more complicated than it needs to be.

Galopin Des Champs is the best horse in training for a reason, and it will take a monstrous performance from his rival to pry the Gold Cup crown away from him.

Gold Cup prize money

The Gold Cup prize money is set at £625,000, with the winner receiving £351,991.08. Here's how the total breaks down:

  • 1st £351,991.08
  • 2nd £132,803.57
  • 3rd £66,616.07
  • 4th £33,428.57
  • 5th 16,928.57
  • 6th £8,616.07
  • 7th £4,428.57

Gold Cup jockey overview

This is where the cream of the crop of the jockey ranks rises to the top. You need nerves of steel, calmness personified, and natural talent to win a Gold Cup, and there is no shortage of jockeys here that can do that.

Paul Townend, a 3 time Gold Cup winner already knows what it takes to win not only a Gold Cup, but back-to-back Gold Cups as he did with Al Boum Photo, and will look to emulate that success with Gold Cup favourite, Galopin Des Champs.

The best of the best will be putting a target on Paul's back, but can the likes of Harry Coben, former Gold Cup winning jockey Nico de Boinville, Grand Slam Champion Rachel Blackmore, or Sean Bown close the 7L winning margin from last season with their mounts?

Time will tell.

Gold Cup trainer overview

It’s crazy to think that, up until Al Boum Photos' first Gold Cup win back in 2019, Willie Mullins had never won the Gold Cup. But just like buses, they all come at once, and he now stands at 3 Gold Cups in the last 5 runnings, and it’s highly likely that he will be adding one more to that list.

Let's not forget that the man behind Kauto Star and Denman’s Gold Cup glory saddles last season’s 2nd in Bravemansgame, and Nicky Hendeson sends the enigma that is Shiskin up to the Gold Cup trip for the first time.

A race where any trainer would love to have a runner, but will the story be back-to-back Gold Cups for Galopin Des Champs, or will it be another fairytale ending for Shark Hanlon and his £800 horse, Hewick?

Triumph Hurdle tips

We start the final day of the Cheltenham Festival with the championship race for 4yo hurdler, and Sir Gino comes in here as 8/11f. But to me, that is not a price I will not consider for a Triumph Hurdle given there are so many alternatives.

Sir Gino was very impressive when winning over course and distance, but the form is nothing to get excited over, and in a race where there could be improvement to come from most of the runners, the best way to attack the Triumph Hurdle is with an each way bet on Majborough at 9/2.

He made his debut for Willie Mullins in the Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival where he finished a strong 3rd, and will have taken a lot away from that experience.

Given the size and scope that Majborough processes, you would be foolish to think that there are no leaps of improvement to come. There are a host of alternative selections to take on Sir Gino, especially considering that this is the Triumph Hurdle, where anything can happen.

County Hurdle tips

The County Hurdle is a race that I look forward to every year and this year is no exception.

When it comes to Cheltenham Festival handicaps be it over hurdles or fences, it will always be a puzzle. But could it be that this year's County Hurdle puzzle has already been solved?

I believe it was with the Gordon Elliott-trained King Of Kingsfield at 6/1.

He comes in here possessing Grade 1 Novices Hurdle form, a Leopardstown Maiden Hurdle win, but more importantly, a mark of 140.

Before the start of the season, King Of Kingsfield was expected to scale the height to Grade 1 glory, but he failed to meet the high expectations.

But I think he is just a slow learner, and with a mark of 140, I think he has a lot of room to work with that mark.

The hustle and bustle that comes with the County Hurdle will hold no fears for him, and granted a trouble free run, I find it hard for him to be out of the top 3 at worst.

Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle tips

We have gone from a race that I love to a race that I love to hate. But that's not to say I don't love finding the winner of the 3m Grade 1 Novices’ Hurdle.

Will it be hard to gauge who is going to improve for the step up to 3 miles and who will crumble up the Cheltenham hill? Yes, as it is every year.

But there is one lurking at 12/1 who is being overlooked, and that is the Willie Mullins-trained Lecky Watson.

At last season's Festival, he finished 4th to A Dream To Share in the Champion Bumper, and the form of that is working out well with every horse who was in behind A Dream To Share has come out and won since.

He started the season with a maiden win and backed that up with a 2nd to the Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle second favourite, Slade Steel.

Reaposing Readin Tommy Wrong who was 7L ahead of him in the Lawlors Of Naas over 2m4f, and to me, the trip was not what he needed haven gotten outpaced at a crucial stage.

The step up to 3m on the old new course will be right up his street, and he can close the gap with Readin Tommy Wrong.

Foxhunter Steeple Chase Tips

The last chance for the amateurs to shine in what is their Gold Cup. The one they all want on their CV, but the one that is the most difficult to win.

We have household names like two-time Grade 1 Festival winner Samcro, former Foxhunters winner, Billaway, and defending champion, Premier Magic.

The betting has it as a two-horse race with It’s On The Line and Ferns Lock fighting it out for favouritism.

It’s On The Line has a win over Ferns Lock this season, but I can see the David Christy-trained Ferns Lock can gain his revenge.

It’s On The Line ran in what can only be described as a gruelling race at Naas back on February 10th, where Billaway came from a different postcode to close to a head at the line. My fear for It’s On The Line and Billaway is that they could have left their chance of winning the Foxhunters at Naas.

For that reason, I will side with Ferns Lock at 5/2 to come out on top.

Mares Chase tips

The newest addition to the Cheltenham Festival, the Mares Chase is becoming more attractive and attracting more quality Mares. Case and point, Dinoblue.

Dinoblue comes in here as the 1/1 favorite on the back of a season that has saw her winning a Grade 3 and Grade 1 chase over 2m & 2m1f, before finishing second to Champion Chase favorite El Fabiolo in the Ladbrokes Dublin Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival, but with all that behind her, I have my reservations about her at Cheltenham.

She has run twice at the Cheltenham Festival and failed to show her true running finishing 9th in the Mares Novices' Hurdle, and then jumper her chance away when making bad mistakes at the second last and last in the Grand Annual, and then add in the new trip she will be trying for the first time, I will be taking her on.

The one I like is Limerick Lace at 9/2.

A rapidly improving mare that has only been out of the first 3 once in the 9 chase stats. She comes in here on the back of a 10L win in a Listed Mares Chase at Doncaster (3rd won a Listed Chase since).

The softer the ground, the greater her chase becomes, but right now, she is a great each way bet for the Mares Chase.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle tips

We close out the 2024 Cheltenham Festival with the Martin Pipe Hurdle, a race that has a habit of producing future Grade 1 winners, with the likes of Galopin Des Champs and  Banbridge on the winners list.

I will be hoping that the Grade 1 lurker can be Quai De Bourbon at 7/2, and Waterford Whispers at 11/2.

Both with attractive profiles coming in here, and ones who have caught my eye in the short time we have seen them on a race course.

Quai De Bourbon is the obvious Willie Mullins lurker with any amount of improvement possible, and Waterford Whispers has shown glimpse of what he may be capable of even with his loss last time out.

I find it hard to split the two, but I have Waterford Whispers narrowly coming out on top.
