Willie Mullins on Cheltenham Gold Cup win

Winning trainer Willie Mullins has had a superb week at Cheltenham and has spoken to ITV following the race, which was won by 7/5 favourite Galopin Des Champs.

He said: "We put ourselves under pressure by saying he had enough stamina to win a Gold Cup, he had enough class to win a Gold Cup.

"I didn't realise how much pressure until about the third last. He flew through and I thought it is going to happen.

"Through the race you are wondering if he is too far back but I had asked Paul to settle him. He had the fastest horse and just needed to ride him home and that is what he has done. "Paul is so good under pressure and I have put him under pressure this week!

"We don't do as much fast work this year, it is all about stamina. The horse is just relaxed, Paul gets them relaxed and puts them asleep, although I did wonder if we had overdone it at the halfway, we were a long way off.

"We won the Gold Cup this year, you'd like to think we come back next year as favourite and win it but you need a lot of luck. I am just delighted he did what he did."

Galopin Des Champs wins Cheltenham Gold Cup

The favourite takes it! What a fantastic race! The 7/5 favourite stormed up the hill hotly pursued by Bravemansgame with Conflated ridden superbly by late replacement jockey Sam Ewing to finish third.

2. Bravemansgame

3. Conflated

Cheltenham Gold Cup underway

And they're off! Who will be the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup 2023?

Galopin Des Champs did not budge as favourite throughout and remains top of the market at 6/1, will the Irish Gold Cup winner make it a double for the season or will A Plus Tard and Rachael Blackmore defend their crown?

Here we go!

After two late jockey changes, Rachael Blackmore is one who will be hoping that her race goes to plan as she returns the Gold Cup to its plinth after winning last year.

Will she be returning to collect the famous cup in roughly 20 minutes' time?

How to watch the Gold Cup on TV

ITV Racing will be on ITV and STV from 1:00pm until 4.30pm and broadcast the first five live races on Friday. The Opening Show is on daily on ITV4 from 9-10am.

Another late jockey change

Sam Ewing replaces Davy Russell on Conflated for the Gold Cup - what a dream for a young jockey who could secure a huge win here at Cheltenham.

Late jockey change

We saw Mark Walsh take a heavy fall in the last race and understandably he won't be ready to run in the Gold Cup, with Nico De Boinville stepping in to ride the 2021 winner.

Gold Cup coming next at 15:30

Just over 20 minutes to go until the Cheltenham Gold Cup, will Rachael Blackmore defend her crown or will Galopin Des Champs live up to the hype?

We could also Minella Indo win for a second time after victory in 2021, or Bravemansgame could make it back-to-back wins for Paul Nicholls after victory in the last race.

This is such a good field and it will be a fantastic race with 13 runners to go in the 3m, 2f, 70y Chase around the New Course here.

Stay Away Fay wins Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle

Ruby Walsh tip for Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

The next race is the 14:50 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle and Ruby Walsh is tipping Corbetts Cross to win the final race before the Cheltenham Gold Cup at 15:30.

Speaking on behalf of Paddy Power, Walsh said: “I’m with Corbetts Cross. He’s longer than Three Card Brag in the betting now which really suits me. He’s a potential super star and I'm with him.

Three Card Brag has done nothing wrong. Sandor Clegane ran well behind Goodland at Leopardstown but Goodland flopped in the Ballymore.”
