Chicago Cubs News: Adding a player via Rule 5 draft isn't smart
The Chicago Cubs protected their prospects from the Rule 5 draft. They have 36 players on their 40-man roster. The team has needs at catcher, first base, center field, and the starting rotation. If they want to compete next season, they need to focus on free agency. They can't avoid getting aggressive during the winter meetings. Almost half of the top free agents are expected to be off the board within a week. Not adding anybody during winter meeting will prove costly to a team looking to win. It will only make things more complicated by using up roster spots in the draft, which is counter-productive.
