Cohen: End of season awards for the 2022 Charlotte Knights

Jeff Cohen covered the Charlotte Knights for FutureSox for the last two seasons. He has just finished his second season covering them.

Zach Remillard was the most improved player in the Charlotte Knights. Blake Rutherford is improving as well. He played first, second, short, third and left this year. He hit 13 home runs and 26 doubles. His slash line was .271/.310/.428.

Carlos Perez has been the toughest player to strike out in the International League this season. Mark Payton had an amazing second half of the season and will battle Zavala for the back-up catcher’s job next spring.

Kyle Kubat has an enthusiasm about baseball and life that is infectious.

The White Sox didn't need to look too deep into the Knights' bullpen this year. Tanner Banks, Bennett Sousa, Anderson Severino and Matt Foster proved to be more than enough guys to man the shuttle between Charlotte and Chicago. Hunter Schryver had the best year statistically, but he retired a few weeks before the end of the season. Andrew Perez and Zach Muckenhirn were among team leaders in appearances, WHIP and batting average against.

Davis Martin was named the Pitcher of the Year. Martin played 12 games in the majors, making 7 starts and tossing 56 innings with a 1.20 WHIP and .239 batting average against.

Cohen gives Lenyn Sosa the award for the best position player. He also gives him the end of season awards for Charlotte Knights. He gives the honor to Leny Soso because of his power.

The Charlotte Knights finished with a record of 58-92. Jake Burger, Davis Martin, Seby Zavala, Romy Gonzalez and Jake Buell were key players for the team. The team was short on starting pitching and used a lot of relievers. In August the Knights went 15-8 and had their best season.

The Charlotte Knights are a farm team of the Chicago White Sox. They have a lot of young players with potential to play in the big leagues. This year's team has some noteworthy prospects, including Carlos Perez, Lenyn Sosa and Yolbert Sanchez. They also have some older players, like Mark Payton and Nick Ciuffo. The team is currently in its third season. It is playing in a league called the International League. Its players are playing for Charlotte, Birmingham and the New York Yankees. The White Sox need to improve their roster this off-season. Oscar Colas is going to lose his position in right field. Carlos Perez and Seby Zavala will be battling for the back-up catcher's job. Lenyn Sosa or Romy Gonzalez will go head-to-head for second base. Charlotte Knights will have another wave of top prospects in 2023.

Jake Burger played well for the Chicago White Sox early in the season. He had some injuries that kept him sidelined for much of the second half.

Cohen is very happy with the season of the Charlotte Knights. He was masked full-time last year and had limited access to players and coaches. Cohen is amazed by how hard Triple-A players work at their craft and how much pressure they are under to earn a big-league roster spot.
