College Football Week 3 Winners: The Southern Illinois Salukis Stun Northwestern In Another FCS Upset

College football is unpredictable and unruly. This week's games were highs and lows.

Southern Illinois Salukis beat Northwestern 31-24 in college football Week 3. The Saluki's were 0-2 in FCS play before the game. They are the sixth FBS team to beat F CS opposition this season. Southern Illinois is the first FSC outfit to win over a Power Five team this fall. The team's coach Nick Hill was the quarterback for the Saluckies in 2006. He was in charge when they beat Indiana.

Marvin Harrison Jr. is the top wide receiver at Ohio State University. Harrison scored two touchdowns against Toledo. He also had 184 yards on seven receptions against Arkansas State. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson were drafted by the Buckeyes this year. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is considered to be the best player in the program.

New Mexico Lobos beat UTEP 27-10 in the college football game on Saturday. The team forced seven turnovers and kept the ball for over 36 minutes. New Mexico hasn't recorded more than three wins since 2016. They face New York State in October. The Lobo's Mountain West schedule features four teams with a losing record. One of them is Colorado State.

Charlotte's Chris Reynolds returned from injury to lead his team to a 42-41 win over Georgia State. Southern Illinois Salukis beat Northwestern in another FCS upset. The 49ers have had a terrible start to the season, losing three consecutive games. The team won the first game of the year against William & Mary. Reynolds threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns. He also led a 69-yard drive with less than two minutes to go. His team's resiliency and leadership helped them to win. It's that element of leadership that you don't see in a box score.

Southern Illinois Salukis beat Northwestern in college football's Week 3. The other teams that didn't do well in the game were: North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa.

There are many examples of coaches who make the difference between winning and losing. In the game between Appalachian State and Texas A&M, Troy's coach took an intentional safety, giving the Mountaineers two points and a 32-28 victory. On the West Coast, Chip Kelly's UCLA team lost 32 to 31 to South Alabama. The Jaguars' fake field goal failed and UCLA converted their own kick.

Arizona State lost 30-21 to Eastern Michigan on Saturday night. Herm Edwards has parted ways with the program. The team has a 26-20 record and no more than eight wins in a season under Edwards. There is an ongoing NCAA investigation into recruiting violations during Edwards' tenure. The elevation of defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce led to the dire situation that the team finds itself in.

Colorado Buffaloes have lost 11 of their last 15 games. They have one of the worst defenses in the nation. Their offense is also poor. The team is playing at UCLA next week.  The team's coach Karl Dorrell is under fire. Minnesota beat Colorado 42-0 in a college football game. Mohamed Ibrahim had a career-rushing-touchdown record in first half.

Iowa Hawkeyes were a 23.5-point favorite over Nevada Wolf Pack in college football Week 3. Iowa won 27-0. Nevada has lost their last two games. They are now 2-1. The team is playing at Air Force on Friday Night Lights. It is the first time in history that a team allowed a quarterback to throw a touchdown in 2022.
