Jockey Jason Collett reckons Hosier saved him from falling in the Wyong Cup and hopes he can repay the horse with a winning ride in the Newcastle Cup on Friday.

The former Lloyd Williams stayer won the Premiers Cup before heading to Wyong, where he was travelling strongly when The Mediterranean broke down in front of him.

More than half the field were put out of the race or lost their riders in the ensuing chaos, and Collett still doesn’t know how he stayed on Hosier.

“It all happened so quick. My horse saw it before I did; I didn’t really have time to react,” Collett said. “He just jumped the fallen horse. I went up in the saddle and come back down and thankfully stayed up.

“I thought there might be something wrong with him after that. He saved me and I didn’t need to put him through any more, so I eased him down.”

Newcastle trainer Mark Minervini checked out Hosier and he came through without injury so is fit to line up at Broadmeadow for his hometown cup, where he is a $4.80 chance.

“The step up to 2300m, it will be a real test for him. But he is the type of horse that when he is rolling and comfortable he will keep going,” Collett said.

Newcastle trainers dominate the top of the betting. Kris Lees has $3.90 favourite Cleveland and Kalapour, which was one knocked out of the Wyong Cup because of interference from the fall, at $5. Lees has booked Melbourne jockeys Ben Melham and Damien Oliver to his Cup hopes.
