Colorado Rockies: How a 100-loss team became the most-bet to make playoffs

We’re less than a month from Opening Day of the 2024 Major League Baseball season, which means that we’re starting to see a greater and greater number of wagers on futures.

One interesting team is getting a lot of bets to make the playoffs at BetMGM sportsbooks: The Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies have monumental 25-1 odds to make the postseason, tied with the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox for the longest odds of any MLB team.

What’s interesting is that the Rockies are the most-bet team by total wagers and No. 2 in total dollars wagered at BetMGM — despite the wagers being a huge long shot to hit.

Not only did Colorado finish 59-103 last season to miss the postseason by 25 games, the team ranks last in offseason spending ($20.08 million) after signing just two Major League free agents in pitcher Dakota Hudson and catcher Jacob Stallings (both on one-year deals). The only other notable acquisition was a trade for Cal Quantrill from the Cleveland Guardians in November.

“With the Rockies, all the bets to make the playoffs are from bettors in Colorado,” John Ewing, spokesperson for BetMGM told For The Win in an email. “Bettors love wagering on the home team!”

A remarkable 99 percent of the bets nationwide at BetMGM are on the Rockies to make the postseason. Colorado last made the postseason in 2018.
