Community Shield Preview

With Manchester City snapping up both Premier League and the FA Cup last season, Arsenal, as last season’s runners-up, make the short hop across London to Wembley to contest this year’s Community Shield.

Not since 2020 have the Gunners found themselves lining up in the annual season curtain-raiser, where they managed to edge past Premier League winners Liverpool on penalties.

That edition was also the last time Manchester City failed to feature, although the subsequent two years have seen them fall to defeat against Leicester in 2021, and latterly Liverpool last year.

They will, of course, take comfort in the fact they have Arsenal in a chokehold if recent history is anything to go by. Not since December 2015 have the Gunners found a way past City in the league, while last season’s treble winners have won all but one of the past 16 meetings in all competitions.

The ferocity of Arsenal’s business in the transfer window suggests their surprise title challenge last year was no coincidence, and this pre-season affair represents an early chance for both teams to size each other up before the new campaign.

Community Shield Betting Tip 1: Rice to be Booked

Arsenal’s marquee summer signing, Declan Rice, represents the significant pull the club now hold.

The former West Ham captain will be eager to impress on what will likely be his first competitive start for his new side.

Mikel Arteta has acknowledged there will be a settling in period for their new £105m acquisition, but Rice will be raring to go in a match that holds a whole lot of symbolism between the league’s superior teams.

He is no stranger to the physical side of the game, and his eagerness to impress could lead him to a caution against a gifted Manchester City midfield.

Rice was booked on five occasions last season, and he could be a likely candidate here.

Community Shield Betting Tip 2: Under 2.5 Goals

The Community Shield, more often than not, sees teams still dusting off the cobwebs ahead of the new season.

In all but two of the previous eight editions there have been under three goals, and although this particular head-to-head saw some goal-laden meetings last term, we can see this affair being characterised by cagey passages of play and squandered chances.

Community Shield Betting Tip 3: Draw

It is also worth noting that half of the previous six iterations have resulted in a draw, with Arsenal winning two of those on penalties.

Arsenal can send a strong signal of their intentions and set the tone for another potential title race, but City’s mental dominance over the Gunners is just too strong for us to side with them as winners.

Although we haven’t predicted an eventual winner, we can see the 90 minute result ending in a stalemate.
