Bulls down Lions inthrilling 12-try Craven Week derby 

The Blue Bulls claimed a big win over the Golden Lions,while there were further victories for the Griffons and Border on day four ofthe SA Rugby U18 Craven Week at Outeniqua Park in George on Thursday. 

Both Gauteng teams showed their attacking intent in thefirst round of matches staged on Tuesday.

The Bulls scored six tries in the40-5 win against Border, while the Lions crossed the line nine times in the55-29 victory over the Pumas. 

The Gauteng derby on Thursday was more closely contested– at least in the first half.

The Lions started well, before the Bulls hit backto take a 21-12 lead into half-time. 

After the break, the Bulls proceeded to score 23unanswered points. The Lions fought back in the latter stages to add four tries– with hooker Ruan Welman completing a hat-trick – but by then the contest waseffectively over.

The Bulls went on to complete a 44-34 victory. 

The Griffons notched up their second win of thecompetition when they beat the Leopards 50-12 on Thursday. Flyhalf Renaldo Kiewetscored two of the Northern Free Staters’ six tries, and finished the game witha personal tally of 28 points. 

Earlier in the day, Griquas and the Limpopo Blue Bullsbattled to a 38-38 draw. The high-scoring clash produced 11 tries, with DwayneLubbe and Valentino Lenge dotting down twice for Griquas, and Hope Seyagabagging a brace for the Limpopo outfit. 

Meanwhile, Border bounced back from their earlier defeatto the Blue Bulls to record a 31-21 win against the Pumas.

Fullback AmaniSomana scored two tries for the Eastern Cape side. 

The Craven Week action will continue on Saturday morning,with the main game on the Outeniqua Park A-field, between WP and the Bulls,kicking off at 13h00.

Southern sidescontinue to impress in George

Eastern Province and Western Province maintained their unbeaten records, while there were wins for the hosts, South Western Districts, and Free State on the third day of the SA Rugby U18 Craven Week at Outeniqua Park in George. 

EP continue to impress at the event and two days after claiming a 26-23 win against a more-fancied Free Side, they racked up a 40-26 victory over Boland, with flanker De Wet Fourie scoring two of their six tries. 

WP went into the fixture against the Sharks on the back of a convincing win against SWD. The clash between the two coastal giants on Wednesday lived up to the hype, with WP emerging as 35-24 victors. 

Earlier in the day, SWD edged the Valke 20-19 to record their first win of the competition. Free State also bounced back from their recent defeat, scoring eight tries in their commanding 54-14 victory over the WP XV. 

The Craven Week action will continue on Thursday morning, with Griquas meeting the Limpopo Blue Bulls at 10:30 in the first game of the day, with the last encounter a Gauteng derby between the Lions and Bulls.

Western Province made it two wins out of two at Craven Week on Wednesday when they beat the Sharks 35-24 in an entertaining encounter in George.

WP led 27-14 at half-time and showed some enterprising back play whenever possible, resulting in three tries.

The Sharks were slightly more forward-orientated and scored their two tries from drives close to the Province line.

Province held onto their lead in the second stanza to secure their win.

Eastern Province beat Boland 40-26 in their Craven Week clash on Wednesday in George.

EP led 20-12 at half-time and, after their opening win over Free State on Monday, have now won two from two.

Despite less-than-perfect underfoot conditions, it was an exciting encounter, with both sides more than willing to give the ball air. 

Eastern Province were electric at times and more than willing to create space by offloading in the tackle.

Tries galore on eventful second day of Craven Week

The Leopards, Griffons, Golden Lions and Blue Bulls recorded big wins on day two of the SA Rugby U18 Craven Week at Outeniqua Park in George.

The Leopards proved too strong for Griquas in the opening fixture of the day. After leading 12-7 at half-time, they kicked on to score 34 unanswered points in the second stanza – and seven tries in all. Wing Lebogang Wageng touched down twice for the side from the North West.

The next match between the Griffons and Limpopo Blue Bulls followed a similar pattern. The team from the far north of the country actually led 17-10 at the break before the Northern Free Staters fired to claim an emphatic 43-22 win.

The Lions delivered a dominant showing in their 55-29 victory over the Pumas. Hooker Esethu Mnebelele as well as backs Kelvin van Wyk and Caleb Lombard scored two tries apiece, with the side from Gauteng crossing the line nine times overall.

In the final game of the day, the Blue Bulls scored six tries in their 40-5 win against Border. Hooker Shaun Schürmann and loose forward Luann Olivier both bagged braces for the Bulls.

The Craven Week action will continue on Wednesday morning, with the Valke tackling the South Western Districts in the first clash at 10:30, with the action culminating at 15h00 when Western Province tackle the Sharks.
