Australia have beaten Pakistan by 62 runs to claim a second successive World Cup victory and leave them fighting for a semi-final berth. On the bottom after successive losses to India and South Africa, Australia are now fourth ahead of Pakistan on net run rate with a match against the Netherlands to come on Wednesday.

While the Netherlands upset South Africa, Australia should beat them as the only non-Test nation in the ten team tournament. Chasing a record 368 for victory, Pakistan were bowled out for 305 in 45.3 overs.

The victory was set up by a 259-run opening partnership between player of the match David Warner (163) and Mitchell Marsh (121), a record for Australia in a World Cup, while Adam Zampa claimed four wickets for a second successive match.

Mitchell Starc had Hasan Ali caught behind for eight, leaving Australia just one wicket away from a second successive victory. It continues Starc’s run as one of the game’s most successful World Cup bowlers.

Adam Zampa has claimed his fourth wicket for a second successive match as Pakistan succumbed to the pressure of a record 368-run chase. Player of the match in Australia’s previous victory against Sri Lanka, the leg-spinner had Mohammad Nawaz stumped for 14.

Josh Hazlewood has been rewarded for an exceptional spell of bowling by claiming the wicket of Usama Mir for a duck. An attempted pull ballooned to Mitchell Starc at fine leg. Hazlewood had conceded fewer than three and a half runs an over, helping to strangle Pakistan’s run chase.

Pakistan 7/277 from 42 overs: Mohammad Nawaz 5

Spinner Adam Zampa has taken two wickets in two overs as Australia attempt to close out victory against Pakistan. First he trapped the dangerous Iftikhar Ahmed leg before wicket for 26 from 20 balls then the pivotal Mohammad Rizwan for 46. It gave Zampa three wickets during another good bowling display.

Pakistan 5/269 from 39 overs. Rizwan 43

Iftikhar Ahmed has hit three sixes in five balls to give Pakistan extra impetus as they chase a record victory target of 368 against Australia. Iftikhar twice lifted deliveries from Pat Cummins over the fence and into the crowd then hit the first ball of the next over from Marcus Stoinis back over the bowlers head for another six.

Pakistan 4/265 from 38 overs: Iftikhar 23, Rizwan 42

Australian captain Pat Cummins has removed Saud Shakeel for 30 from 31 balls with Pakistan still needing eight and a half an over for a record run chase of 368 to claim an unlikely victory. Uncomfortable against the short ball, Saud attempted a pull which lobbed over Marcus Stoinis at cover, who ran back to take a fine, diving catch.

Pakistan 4/232 from 35 overs: Rizwan 34, Iftikhar 0

Pakistan’s most recent batsman Saud Skakeel required a concussion test after a bouncer from Josh Hazlewood hit him on the helmet and flew over wicketkeeper Josh Inglis for four leg byes. He had scored 10 off 15 balls but lifted the last ball of Hazlewood’s seventh over down the ground to the boundary with Pakistan requiring eight and a half an over.

Pakistan 3/200 from 30 overs: Mohammad Rizwan 19, Saud Skaheel 14

In a crucial breakthrough Australian captain Pat Cummins dismissed his Pakistan counterpart Babar Azam for just 18 with an outstanding diving catch at mid-wicket. Babar went back and hammered a shortish ball from spinner Adam Zampa but Cummins threw himself to his right to grab the hot chance. Cummins was overjoyed after dropping a catch earlier in the innings.

Pakistan 3/179 off 27 overs: Mohammad Rizwan 15, Saud Shakeel 2

Both Pakistani opening batsmen have been dismissed by Marcus Stoinis, with Iman ul Haq well caught by a diving Mitchell Starc on the third man fence for 70 from 71 balls. It was a terrific piece of fielding after two dropped catches earlier in Pakistan’s innings.
