Cronulla Sharks vs Canterbury Bulldogs Predictions

Nicho Hynes has proven people wrong his entire life and I expect him to do the same this week against the Bulldogs. The Sharks halfback controversially missed selection in the NSW squad for Origin 2 and I expect him to have a blinder against Canterbury.

However, the bookies are also predicting the same and have set the totals a little short considering the absence of Matt Burton, who has been the centre of the Canterbury attack this season. I predict Canterbury will struggle to score points and will not be able to cover the spread as underdogs.

William Kennedy scored a hat-trick against the Dogs in Round 8, so getting evens odds on the fullback to score a try is a steal.

  • When victorious this year, the Cronulla have held their opponents under 14.5 points in 5 of their 7 wins.
  • The Sharks have beaten Canterbury in their previous 4 meetings, including 2 games by a margin of over 15 points.
  • Since moving to the club, the Canterbury Bulldogs have never played without Matt Burton in the lineup.
  • William Kennedy has 12 tries in 13 games, including 3 tries against Canterbury in round 8.

Head to Head

Cronulla have had it over Canterbury in recent times, winning five of the last seven games, including a victory in Round 8 by 33-20, on the back of Will Kennedy, scoring three tries.

The Sharks dominated in Round 3 with over 300 more Run Metres than the Dogs. They also broke the Canterbury line seven times and recorded 35 tackle breaks.

Cronulla Sharks Form

The Sharks have not been in good form lately losing their last two, against the Storm and the Broncos. However, they have won six of seven games against bottom 8 sides in 2023.

They have not looked as good with the ball as they did earlier in the season.

Even when the Sharks have got a win in the last month, they have had the opportunity to put teams away but have failed to do so with uncharacteristic errors and poor game management.

Cronulla Sharks Team News

The addition of Thomas Hazelton to the 17 is the only change for the Sharks this week, replacing Royce Hunt who will miss an extended period.

Toby Rudolf has been named in the reserves and could be a late inclusion.

Canterbury Bulldogs Form

Canterbury are coming off a 34-12 loss to the Parramatta Eels, looking very unorganised defensively and being opened up through the middle of the field.

They were never really a threat to the Eels defensive line, with Matt Burton and Jacob Preston the only two that were looking to create.

The Doggies sit just one more loss away from the bottom of the ladder and with the Dragons on the bye this week and the Tigers going up against a depleted Melbourne Storm, a loss this week could see them tied on the bottom rung of the NRL standings.

Canterbury Bulldogs Team News

Josh Addo-Carr will miss the game due to Origin selection, being replaced on the wing by Braidon Burns.

Matt Burton has also been called into the NSW side as 18th Man and is expected to be replaced by Kyle Flanagan.
