Dallas Stars vs. Montreal Canadiens Prediction, Preview, and Odds

The Dallas Stars are traveling to the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec to face the Montreal Canadiens. Dallas is 31-14-6 this season and sits second in the Western Conference. Montreal is 13th in the Eastern Conference and has a record of 21-21-8. In their prior meeting this season, the Canadiens won their game in Dallas with a final score of 4-3. The puck drop is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST.

Dallas' Top Ranked Offense

The Dallas Stars are traveling to Montreal after their loss on Wednesday to the Toronto Maple Leafs with a final score of 4-5. This loss would break their four game winning streak they started prior to the Allstar break. Dallas this season has one of the top rated offense averaging 3.67 goals per game, ranking them third overall. On defense the Stars are playing average allowing a goals against average of 3.06 goals against. Any success they are having on defense I will attest more toward their goaltending from Jake Oettinger.

This season Jake Oettinger has been playing well in net for the Stars. Oettinger has a record of 17-9-2 with a goals against average of 2.96 and a save percentage of .905. Since returning from the Allstar break, Oettinger has played one game in which he made 47 saves on 48 shots on net.

Montreal Having Issues on Defense

The Montreal Canadiens are returning home after their win on Tuesday against the Washington Capitals with a final score of 5-2. This was their first game after returning back from the Allstar break. Montreal has been averaging only 2.74 goals per game this season, ranking them 28th overall in scoring. On defense it somehow gets worse for the Canadiens as they allow an average of 3.46 goals against per game. This is mainly due to their penalty kill which ranks third to last in the NHL at 74%.

Sam Montembeault has been having some difficulties in net this season. Montembeault has a record of 12-7-4 with a goals against average of 3.06 and a save percentage of .907. In his first game back from the Allstar break we saw Montembeault make 37 saves on 39 shots on net to get his team the win against Washington.

Rating:

I think Dallas is favored a bit too much in this matchup. Montreal has managed to win against Dallas already this season away from home and now are facing them with home advantage. I think a major factor in this game will come in special teams. Montreal in their last five home games has a powerplay percentage of 29.4%, which places them within the top five of the NHL. Dallas in their last five games on the road have been struggling heavily on the penalty kill with a penalty kill percentage of 50%, which is the lowest in the league. Montreal should be able to get an edge with their special teams and keep this game close.

I am taking the Montreal Canadiens at +1.5.

Prediction: Montreal Canadiens +1.5 ( -137 )

Rating:

Dallas is averaging 3.79 goals per game in their last five games on the road. Montreal is averaging 2.98 goals against in their last five at home. I have no doubt that Dallas will get at least three goals in this game but I expect Montreal to keep this game close. Their last three games against each other has resulted in all three games going over 6.5 goals. This game just looks like a 4-3 overtime type of game and with that I am taking the over.

Take the over at 6.5.

Prediction: Over 6.5 ( -112 )
