Derby alumni: Here's the latest on 98 classic graduates

The Derby Alumni tracker checks in with the horses who raced in the Kentucky Derby this year and in previous years, keeping up with what they have done since they ran for the roses.

2023 Kentucky Derby

Three runners from the Kentucky Derby as well as one scratched horse contested the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers on Saturday at Saratoga. The best of the Kentucky Derby contingent was Disarm, who settled at the rear early and rallied to finish second, a length behind winner Arcangelo. Tapit Trice, who broke slightly slowly but sat closer to the pace with newly-added blinkers, was another 2 1/2 lengths behind in third. Forte, scratched from the Kentucky Derby, flattened out to fourth as the favorite in the Travers. Kentucky Derby winner Mage had a rough beginning, never kicked on and finished seventh.

Two other Kentucky Derby entrants were in action this weekend as well. Verifying cut back to seven furlongs for the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1), where he tracked midpack and ran on to finish second beaten 1 3/4 lengths by late-finishing One In Vermillion. Lord Miles, scratched from the Derby, closed from last in the seven-furlong Robert Hilton Memorial at Charles Town, finishing second, two lengths behind the more tactically placed Damon's Mound.

2022 Kentucky Derby

Tawny Port is being reinvented as a turf horse as a 4-year-old. After a fifth-place finish in the Bowling Green (G2) in his first start for trainer Christophe Clement, he thrived on a class drop and a stretch out in the 1 5/8-mile John's Call last Wednesday. He stalked the pace set by long shot Tide of the Sea, led near half a mile out, and kept on to win by 3 1/2 lengths over favored Sy Dog. This was Tawny Port's first win since the 2022 Ohio Derby (G3).

Zozos also returned to action Aug. 9 in the Philip H. Iselin (G3), returning to graded company after a three-win streak in allowance and ungraded stakes company. He was bet down to 1-2 favoritism given his recent form. He set the pace but weakened to fourth, 3 3/4 lengths behind winner Whelan Springs.

2021 Kentucky Derby

Winless since the 2021 Tampa Bay Derby almost 30 months ago, Helium snapped that streak Monday afternoon at Parx. Sent off the odds-on favorite Monday afternoon in a $25,000 starter allowance at a mile and 70 yards on dirt, the son of Ironicus ran to the money. He stalked the pace set by long shot Mega Charlie before making a bid near the three-eighths, and kept on in the lane to win by a length and a half over Jaa Mode.

Like the King returned Thursday in optional-claiming allowance company at Woodbine, going nine furlongs on the all-weather track. He tracked in range of the pace, but was outpaced down the lane and finished fifth, 6 1/2 lengths behind confident victor War Court.

2020 Kentucky Derby

Storm the Court made his first start in over 10 months on Aug. 19 in an optional-claiming allowance race at a mile on the Saratoga grass. It was his first start for trainer Tom Amoss; the 2019 juvenile champion had been in the Peter Eurton barn previously. He stalked the pace but lacked the needed kick in the lane, crossing the wire fifth beaten 4 1/4 lengths by Duke of Hazzard.

Mr. Big News made his third start of the year Monday at Ellis Park in an optional-claiming allowance race at 1 1/8 miles on the grass. He attended the early pace set by odds-on favorite F Five but came up empty in upper stretch and weakened to finish seventh, 4 3/4 lengths behind the frontrunning winner.

2019 Kentucky Derby

Long Range Toddy went 52 months between his fourth career win and his fifth. He had to wait only about a month between his fifth and his sixth. Stepping up from an optional-claiming allowance win July 16 into handicap company on Saturday, Long Range Toddy brought his best once again. He made the early lead in the dirt mile as the 123-pound joint highweight, cleared in upper stretch and held to win by a length over Big and Classy, the favorite in the six-horse field.

Gray Magician had been entered to race last Wednesday in a dirt-mile allowance at Canterbury. But the race was canceled because of extreme heat.
