Detroit Red Wings at Dallas Stars odds, picks and predictions

The Detroit Red Wings (14-8-4) take on the Dallas Stars (15-8-3) Monday at American Airlines Center. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Wings vs. Stars odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Wings are coming off a 5-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators Saturday, but they have to bounce back from a scary incident in the game. C Dylan Larkin was checked in the back of the head and neck area and laid motionless on the ice for a moment. LW David Perron retaliated and was served a match penalty and will likely face a suspension. The Wings have lost 2 in a row and will have to show resilience likely without Larkin.

The Stars are coming off a 6-1 bludgeoning by the Vegas Golden Knights Saturday. They have lost 3 of 4 and slipped to 3rd place in the Central Division. C Roope Hintz missed the last game due to illness, and he’s questionable for this one. He scored his 9th and 10th goals Thursday in the last game he played.

Red Wings at Stars projected goalies

Ville Husso (8-4-2, 3.65 GAA, .886 SV%) vs. Jake Oettinger (10-7-2, 2.84 GAA, .905 SV%, 1 SO)

Husso has allowed 10 goals in his last 2 starts, stopping 56 of 66 shots fired his way. He’s a dependable goalie that is better than his numbers suggest, but he’s in a rut. He has allowed at least 2 goals in every start this season and 3 or more in 12 of 14. Husso was 0-1-1 and allowed 6 goals on 38 shots in his 2 starts against Dallas last year.

“Otter” is in a rut, too, and he has allowed 15 goals in his last 3 starts. He served up 5 to the Florida Panthers Thursday and 6 to VGK Saturday. Oettinger is strangely more susceptible at home with a 4-4-1/3.33/.881 split vs. a 6-3-1/2.41/.923 split on the road. He was 2-0-0 with a 1.72 GAA and .923 SV% in 2 starts against Detroit last year.

Red Wings at Stars picks and predictions

Prediction

Stars 5, Red Wings 3

The Stars have won the last 5 meetings with Detroit, and there’s no reason to believe they won’t take this one. The Wings haven’t won in Dallas since the 2015-16 season, and the Larkin injury could have a lingering blur over the club.

That said, you can’t take -210 for Dallas, especially when we don’t know the status of Hintz.

Instead, I like PATRICK KANE OVER 2.5 SHOTS (-155). I look for him to step up in his 3rd game with his club and potentially light the lamp. He has 3+ shots in each of his 1st 2 games.

The Stars have beaten the Wings in 8 of 10, and half of those were by multiple goals. Dallas is just 9-14 on the puck line this year, but I really feel this is a spot they can catch Detroit flatfooted. They’ve hit the puck line in 2 of the last 4.

I’ll take a chance on STARS -1.5 (+115).

Over, Over, Over. It has cashed in 5 of the last 7 meetings. The Wings are 13-9-1 O/U, and Dallas is 12-11-0. We touched on how much each goalie is struggling. You can wait until puck drop to get a better line live, but I’ll take the OVER 6.5 (-110).
