Die Wilge reaches North Vaal finals for first time in history

In a monumental achievement, Die Wilge School has carved its name in the annals of North Vaal rugby history by reaching the North Vaal Finals for the first time ever.

This much-anticipated match took place on Saturday, 12 August, with hosts, Die Wilge beating  Technical High School (THS) Rhodesfield from Kempton Park by 19-17 in a thrilling encounter.

The showdown at Die Wilge’s home ground was nothing short of gripping, as both teams displayed their prowess on the field. The atmosphere was electric as the spectators gathered to witness this historic clash.

Die Wilge’s inside centre, Bafana Mzamo, wasted no time in setting the tone for the match, securing a quick try that sent waves of excitement through the crowd. However, THS Rhodesfield demonstrated their mettle, executing two beautifully orchestrated tries to close the first half with a 12-7 lead in their favour.

Undeterred by the deficit, Die Wilge entered the second half with renewed determination. Their resilience and teamwork were on full display as they orchestrated a stunning team try, culminating in a powerful finish by their eight man and captain, Reabetswe Mekgoro. Yet, THS Rhodesfield was quick to counter, scoring a try in the corner that extended their lead to 17-12 with a mere 10 minutes remaining on the clock.

The final moments of the match were nothing short of exhilarating. Die Wilge’s flyhalf, Boitumelo Mancentsa, showcased his skill with a remarkable pass that set up Bafana Mzamo for his second try of the game.

A breathtaking 60-meter dash down the field sealed the deal, as Die Wilge secured a nail-biting 19-17 victory.

Die Wilge’s journey to the North Vaal Finals is particularly remarkable given the unique context of the school. Catering to learners with special educational needs, Die Wilge competed against high schools with significantly larger student populations. The school’s triumph over these odds stands as a testament to the dedication, talent, and heart that the team brings to the rugby field.

The finals are set to take place on Saturday, 19 August. Die Wilge’s opponent is yet to be determined.
