Dodgers fan taunts Manny Machado to pay after betting Padres contract

Los Angeles Dodgers fans were rightfully a bit miffed in 2019 when Manny Machado signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the San Diego Padres.

After the Baltimore Orioles sent Machado to the Dodgers for a haul of prospects ahead of the 2018 trade deadline, the hope was that the perennial All-Star would re-sign in Los Angeles. Instead he went to the club’s division rival just down the road.

It was no surprise that Dodgers fans started to chirp at Machado when he returned to LA with his new club the following year, but it was Machado’s response to the taunts that made news when he “bet” a Dodgers fan his contract the Padres would win a World Series before his former team did.

Uh, yeah, about that. The Dodgers won the title in 2020 — sweeping the Padres in the NLDS along the way — and the fan Machado bet is back to claim his $300 million prize.

There are taunts and there are taunts. And this one is surely the latter. There’s no one around who actually believes Machado will give up his $300 million, but it sure would be awesome if he found a way to do something for this fan. An autographed copy of his contract could work, since the bet was technically over the document and not the money owed.

The key point of the story, however, is that someone finally learned how to properly use a risk-free bet.
