Betting on sports in North Carolina

North Carolina has legalized both online and retail sports betting, with online sports betting set to begin on March 11, 2024, just in time for the ACC Men's Basketball Tournament. The law to permit online sports betting, HB 347, was signed by Gov. Roy Cooper on June 14, 2023. From March 1, sports enthusiasts can pre-register for accounts with eight licensed sportsbook operators in the state. This allows users time to familiarize themselves with the apps and deposit options before the official launch. On top of being aged 21 and over, users need to provide a full name, address, and social security number or alternative identification.

Although online betting won't be available till later in the month, there are three tribal casinos in the state that do offer in-person betting. When online betting goes live, sportsbook operators such as FanDuel, DraftKings, bet365, BetMGM, and Caesars will offer a variety of betting options, including major U.S. and college sports.

Retail sports betting will be available later in a tiered launch at eight designated venues. North Carolina hopes this timeline will give users a chance to get acquainted with the system ahead of the much-anticipated March Madness: a prime time for sports betting.
