Betting on sports in North Carolina
North Carolina is gearing up for the launch of online and retail sports betting on March 11, 2024, coinciding with the start of the ACC "March Madness" tournament. Since June 14, 2023, when Gov. Roy Cooper signed HB 347 into law, the state has worked towards enabling this service. Eight sportsbook operators are facilitating pre-registration so bettors can start setting up accounts, a process which requires proof of age (21 or older) and identity.
While online betting is not yet active, in-person betting is available at three tribal casinos in the state. Depositing funds into the online accounts is already possible to familiarize customers with the process ahead of the launch. A number of popular sportsbooks will be operating in the market, including FanDuel, DraftKings, bet365, and BetMGM, amongst others.
While the preparation process has taken longer due to the need to build a new gaming infrastructure, this timeline aims to ensure the service is live in time for March Madness.
