Dubai World Cup Tips: Writing On The Wall For Another Big Country Grammer Performance

Eight Group 1 & 2 races from the top table at Meydan this Saturday night with the action all leading up to the Dubai World Cup at 4:35pm GMT.

Plenty to look forward across the card with many winners from last year coming back to try and defend their titles. One of those heroes from last year is Lord North, who goes in the Dubai Turf at 3:10, and is one of seven booked rides on the card for Frankie Dettori.

But Dettori’s big payday could come in the biggest race of the lot – the Dubai World Cup – as he partners last year’s winner again – Country Grammer. The Bob Baffert-trained 5 year-old won at 15/2 last year, but the best horse racing betting sites are much shorter this time – he’s expected to go off as the 2023 Dubai World Cup favourite.

If successful in the $12m race, he’ll not only boost Frankie Dettori’s net worth but also take his wins in the race to five – making him the Dubai World Cup winning-most jockey of all-time.

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 MEYDAN TIPS: Japan are sending over a big team across all the races again and Bathrat Leon (great name for a horse) can get them off to a flyer. This 5 year-old actually took this 12 months ago and this would have been the target again since. He’s warmed up with a win in Saudi Arabia last month over 7f and will have no problem stepping up to a mile. CD winners Prince Eiji and Royal Mews, who is from the Bhupat Seemar yard that won this in 2021, can do best of the rest.

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 MEYDAN TIPS: The stayers are on show next so stamina will be key – Quickthorn and 2021 winner of the race Subjectivist, are the only two proven distance winners over 2m in the race. However, the way Ardakan ran on last time over 1m6f suggests this extra trip will be within range. This Marco Botti runner was a staying on second that day here at Meydan, so looks well worth a crack over 2m. Course winners Enemy for Ian Williams and Siskany for Godolphin can go well too.

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 MEYDAN TIPS: This could be the battle of the ‘Al’s. Al Dasim will be popular with a string of wins next to his name, but this is another step up in grade here. So we are sticking with Godolphin’s Al Suhail, who is a proven G2 winner. He’s also won his last two at Meydan, so the track is fine and both those wins came by an easy 4 lengths. William Buick rides for Charlie Appleby – the pair teamed up in this race in 2019 with Blue Point. Sigh Success is another to respect with Ryan Moore getting the leg-up.

1:50 – UAE Derby (Group 2) (Dirt) (3yo) 1m1½f

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 MEYDAN TIPS: This 3 year-old colt looks to be trainer Aidan O’Brien’s best chance of getting something at the meeting. Cairo has won 3 of his five starts, including a Listed race at Dundalk last time. Yes, this is a big step up again, but the Ballydoyle camp clearly feel he’s up to the better company, while breeding suggests the extra trip will bring out more. Dura Erede and Derma Sotogake can fly the flag for Japan.

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 MEYDAN TIPS: Switzerland got the job done in this race last year and has clearly been targeted at the race again, with just one run since. This Bhupat Seemar runner won that only other start at the start of the year in Saudi Arabia and has been freshened up since with 78-days off. Has gone well off a break in the past and regular rider Tadhg O’Shea continues his partnership. Of the rest, the Frankie-ridden Hopkins will have more to give and Godolphin’s Japan runner Lemon Pop should fizz nicely.

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 MEYDAN TIPS: Lord North has a top record in this race (2 wins), so can’t be ignored. Won the Winter Derby at Lingfield last time, but he’s not getting any younger at 7 and this looks harder. Do Deuce is the likely favourite for Japan and impressed in winning a G2 at Hanshin last time, but Nations Pride just edges it. This 4 year-old is a course winner and comes here winning the G3 Dubai Millennium Stakes here in February. We also know he stays further than this 1m1f trip having won over 1m4f, which jockey William Buick use to his advantage.

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 MEYDAN TIPS: The clear top-rated in the field here is Equinox for Japan. This very classy 4 year-old has won 3 of his 5 starts and is yet to finish out of the top two. He beat the Saudi Cup winner Panthalassa two runs back by a length – and that horse is one of the fancies for the Dubai World Cup. Easy 2022 Irish Derby winner Westover is another to note, but last year’s winner Shahryar can take silver, with Rebel’s Romance the bronze.

SPORTSLENS 1-2-3 MEYDAN TIPS: Onto the ‘big one’ and Country Grammer, despite a wide draw (14) can become the only the second back-to-back winner. He won the race by 1 3/4 lengths last season under Frankie and since then has run first or second in all races. Yes, he saw the back of Flightline last season – but so did a lot of good horses. He’s since run a close second in the Saudi Cup to Panthalassa, who runs again too. But he can reverse that form here after staying on well, plus with the Meydan track we know suiting. T O Keynes, can go best for the Japan runners – there are 8 of them – and the only UK runner Algiers (Simon & Ed Crisford) has caught the eye winning two Group 2 races at Meydan over the winter.
