So I’m back to being hot again picking the Oilers, 2-0 in the last 2 and I’m feeling it for this one tonight.

Today is deadline day and there’s about 3 hours left on the clock as I write this, and I would like to see the Oilers do something else but I doubt it. And Winnipeg is interesting  because after the Niederreitter move they might want to still make an upgrade.

The Jets are one of the teams in the west that scare me deeply as an Oilers fan if they get them in the conference final, just their goalie alone has the ability to steal a series. If he can get hot and completely take away 97/29 the Oilers would be in trouble.

But as far as this game tonight is concerned, the Jets are kind of struggling as of late and don’t look to be in the same shape as they have been for much of this season.

However having said that, while I was typing that they traded for Vlad Namestikov which is likely to happen all day while we work.

So without further ado, let’s dive into this one.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers are playing very good hockey right now, with an excellent performance against Boston where they just came up a bit short and then following that up with their best performance of the year against Toronto.

Offense

Offensively this team is a great bet just because of McDavid alone who is on a different planet right now. 5 straight multi goal games is just ridiculous.

Defense

Mattias Ekholm looked great in his debut playing alongside Evan Bouchard and offered a calming and veteran presence to that pairing which can be hectic and chaotic with the inconsistencies in Bouchard’s game.

Goaltending

Goaltending is still a legitimate question mark for this team if you’re an outsider evaluating them. Skinner for my money is a really good player and looks like he could be a stud in the league, but in fairness his wins are not there despite having a solid GAA and really good sv%.

The theory behind this is that the Oilers need to score more with Campbell in the net because he lets soft ones in whereas they don’t put together the best performances when Skinner is in the cage.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets are an interesting team right now.

Offense

Offensively this team doesn’t have a ton of flash. Tied for 19th in the league with 3.09 goals per game.

They also don’t get a ton of pucks on net, 22nd in the league in that category with an average of 30 per night, which isn’t terrible at all but not enough for a team with a mediocre shooting percentage (10.2%).

Defense

Frank Seravlli, insider for the Daily Faceoff says they need to get tougher and upgrade on the blueline which is a take I totally disagree with. This is kind of the area of the game the Jets excel at and with a guy like Dillon on the back end I am not sure that they aren’t already tough.

Their numbers are potentially inflated because of goaltending no doubt but nevertheless their major metrics are pretty solid and pose risks to any team in the NHL.

Goaltending

Hellebuyck is expected to start in this one and his numbers are legit Vezina worthy. One of my favourite goalies in the NHL without question.

Free Winnipeg Jets vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL Prediction

Anytime a total is juiced one way heavily I usually go that way, but in this case with the Jets lack of goal production and good goaltending, I am very tempted to take the under/6.5 at +115.

Give me the Oilers ML for sure though, I think they stay hot.
