The Edmonton Oilers (31-18-1, 3rd in Pacific Division) travel to Texas to take on the Dallas Stars (34-14-6, 1st in Central Division) on Saturday afternoon at American Airlines Center. The Oilers have won two of their previous three matchups with the Stars, including a 6-3 victory in Dallas. The puck drops at 3:00 PM Eastern time.

Oilers fall to Blues

The Oilers have lost two of their previous three games, including a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Blues on the road Thursday. Edmonton took a 2-1 lead in the first period on goals by centers Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but goalie Stuart Skinner gave up four goals in the second and the Oilers failed to mount a comeback. The Edmonton defense has been lacking recently, allowing four goals or more in three straight games.

Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch on the defeat Thursday night:

“I thought we moved it, made some really good plays with the puck, not just giving it away, we were composed. And, you know, I think there was maybe a couple of shifts that weren’t up to our standards and one that we got scored against, but other than that, I liked how we were just keeping our game simple, getting in on the forecheck and then spending some time in the offensive zone, because that’s where we were playing our best.”

Key injuries: No injuries that will affect the game are being reported by the Oilers.

Star win again

The Stars won their third straight game when they took down the Nashville Predators 9-2 on the road Thursday evening. Dallas jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the first period on goals by four different skaters and they never looked back. Centers Matt Duchene and Wyatt Johnston finished with two goals each and Tyler Seguin scored and dished out two assists in the win.  The Stars have been winning with their defense, limiting their opponent to two goals or less in three straight.

Duchene on the win:

“Sometimes we’re a slow-starting team, and that definitely wasn’t the case tonight. That was great.”

Key injuries: RW Evgenii Dadonov is on injured reserve for the Stars.

Rating:

While both teams have potent offensives in 2024 (3.7 goals per game for the Stars versus 3.4 goals per game for the Oilers), Edmonton goalies have the edge on defense. Edmonton currently ranks in the top 10 among their peers in average goals allowed per game versus a middle-of-the-pack ranking for the Stars. Edmonton has won two of their previous three matchups with the Stars, including a comfortable 6-3 victory the last time the two teams met in Dallas. The Oilers have been effective playing away from their home stadium, winning at a 56% clip. The Oilers have won seven of their last 10 games overall and five of their last eight games on the road. The trends strongly suggest the Oilers will come out on top when they visit Dallas on Thursday.

Take the Oilers.

Prediction: Oilers -108

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

Two of the previous three matchups between these two squads went over the goal total, including nine goals scored in total in their last contest played at American Airline Center. The Oilers have scored four or more goals against Dallas goaltenders in two of their previous three games. The Stars have an elite offense this season, ranking second in the league in average goals scored per game, so the odds they score quickly in bunches are high. The Oilers are also ranked in the top 10 among their peers in several key offensive categories, so look for them to add to the scoresheet as well. The Stars have gone over the goal total in four of their previous seven games overall and two of three at home. They have scored four goals or more in three of their last four games. The Oilers have gone over in their last two. Most signs point to a higher-scoring affair when these two teams meet in Dallas on Thursday.

Take the over.

Prediction: Over 6.5 Goals
