Ehlers, Jets stay hot with OT win against Senators

Scores at 4:14 for Winnipeg, which gets 10th victory in 11 games; Ottawa loses for 7th time in past 9

Recap: Jets at Senators 1.20.24

OTTAWA --Nikolaj Ehlers scored 4:14 into overtime to give the Winnipeg Jets a 2-1 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday.

"Unfortunately, we see that in practice against us as defensemen all the time," Brenden Dillon said of Ehlers' goal. "He's a special player, makes special plays like that, turning nothing really, a simple 1-on-1, into an unbelievable, highlight-reel game-winner. I thought it was fantastic."

Ehlers deked defenseman Jakob Chychrun in the high slot and beat Joonas Korpisalo low blocker with a backhand shot.

"The backhands are usually pretty hard for goalies," Ehlers said. "Sometimes we don't know where they're going, so the goalie doesn't know either. Whereas on the forehand, you're usually picking a spot and you hit it pretty well. I was going far side, was hoping I could put it exactly where I put it."

Mason Appleton scored, and Connor Hellebuyck made 34 saves for the Jets (30-10-4), who are 10-1-0 in their past 11 games.

It was the 34th straight game Winnipeg allowed three goals or fewer and the 14th straight game it allowed two goals or fewer.

"We're not talking about it before games like, 'Hey we've got to keep the streak going,'" Dillon said. "We're just dialed in on playing our game, playing Winnipeg Jet hockey. We know we've got enough skill and ability to score goals, but when we really lock into the defensive side of the game, we're going to create turnovers, we're going to get our looks and we've just been doing that consistently."

Parker Kelly scored, and Korpisalo made 27 saves for the Senators (16-24-1), who lost for the seventh time in nine games (2-6-1).

"I thought that was probably the first game that we stuck with the gameplan, and we were patient," Ottawa interim coach Jacques Martin said. "Even after two (periods), we're down one and we felt it's going to come and it did and we got a goal and tied it. We had some opportunities."

Appleton gave the Senators a 1-0 lead at 14:35 of the second period when he took a centering pass from Nino Niederreiter on a 3-on-1 rush and beat Korpisalo glove side with a wrist shot from the slot. Appleton has scored in back-to-back games after not scoring in 25 straight games.

"Give us credit for finding a way to win the game even though I would say we weren't at our best," Jets coach Rick Bowness said. "But 'Helly' is going to make the timely saves, and 'Nik' is going to get that timely goal. We get the two points and move on."

Kelly tied it 1-1 at 4:43 of the third period when he one-timed a centering pass from Vladimir Tarasenko in the slot.

"The whole game, we didn't give them much," Kelly said. "It was a really good game and I thought we deserved a better fate."

Ottawa forward Josh Norris had an assist in 20:04 of ice time in his return after missing four games with an upper-body injury.

"I thought we played a good game," Norris said. "They've got a good team and don't give you much. For 60 minutes, I thought we played a good game. A guy makes a really good play in overtime and that's the game."
